Moms of 5 month olds

Is your dc sleeping through the night? I am started to get worried since Drew still gets up 5 - 10x a night. Last night he woke up every hour from 1:30 until 6am. We fed him at midnight so he wasn't hungry and then when the whole house got up at 6am he still wasn't clamoring to eat. Its like he cant get himself in a deep sleep and continues to wake constantly. The longest he has EVER slept is 6 hours. Someone please help - do you think I should call the ped about this???

Re: Moms of 5 month olds

Are you swaddling him? I have found that DS sleeps the best when he is swaddled. Also, maybe he is gassy? Could he be teething?

Molly is almost 6 months and still doesn't sleep through the night. She gets up anywhere from 1-4 times a night. I have found that if I keep her bedtime routine consistant, she sleeps better. I also bring her to bed with me sometimes if she is getting up a lot during the night. She tends to sleep better then.

Re: Moms of 5 month olds

Is he waking crying or just playing? Does he nap during the day? Ryan is 5 months and not sleeping thru consistently - in the past 2 months I had 2 nights that he did.

Could he be teething? Gassy? Have you changed his diet at all? It could be so many things Chat Icon I totally feel your pain!!

Re: Moms of 5 month olds

could he be teething???? Sydney was just 5 months and she has been sleeping through since just before 3 monthsChat Icon (from about 10pm-8am) but she was always a good sleeper from the start.

Now that she is teething again (2 broke through 3 weeks ago) she gets up 1-2x a night... not hungry either just uncomfortable.

I dont swaddle Sydney anymore but we did for the first 3 months and I definitely think that helped her sleep. Is he on cereal yet?

does he maybe still have his days and nights confused? do you have a bedtime routine??

these are just some of the things on here that seem to help the other mommies...

I wouldnt worry though, I think there are many babies that still arent sleeping through at 5 months, hang in there it will happen!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Moms of 5 month olds

5-10x a night sounds a little excessive for his age. Does he go back to sleep on his own or does he need you to comfort him? Sometimes DD wakes up in the middle of the night and fusses for a minute(never actually cries) then falls back to sleep. I would probably mention this to the Dr. He must be exhausted (mommy too!)Chat Icon

I was going to say the same things other did - do you swaddle him? He might be getting too old to be swaddled but maybe if you do it for a few nights so he gets the hang of being all snug and tight, he'll sleep longer. Being swaddled taught (I think) DD to sleep through the night.

Also, DD has been sleeping through the night but last night was up 3 times because of gas. So that could be it too....

Also, I find that when she naps MORE during the day, she sleeps better at night. I know it sounds wierd, but it's true.

{{hugs}} - I know what it's like with a kid who doesn't sleep.

Well at least I'm not totally alone. He's never been a good sleeper but at least we have a bedtime routine. He goes down at 7ish every night and sleeps pretty soundly until about 11:30 - 12:30. Then he wakes for a bottle and from then on I have to go in every 30 - 60 minutes to put the paci back in. He cries if I don't. I have tried to let him cry (one night up to an hour) but he just cannot self soothe.

As for naps, he does nap 3x a day. He used to be a catnapper but at least now I've gotten him to take 45-60 minute naps.

I just left a message for the ped so we'll see what he says. The whole house is exhausted and I can barely keep my eyes open at work. I just want to make sure there's nothing medically wrong thats preventing him from sleeping.

Does he seem uncomfortable when he wakes? Maybe he's having gas issues? I agree with others about swaddling. Kaylee is 4 months old and we swaddled from 1-3 months until she got used to sleeping through the night.

jiavana is 5 mths and has been sleeping through the night since right before 3 mths. She usually sleeps from 8 - 730a.

Does your DC nap a lot during the day? Jiavana barely sleeps during the day which is why I think she sleeps so good at night.

DS is almost 6 months old and has been sleeping through the night since he was 2 months old. There was a time about a month ago or so where he got up once a night to eat for a week but after that he has not gotten up since.

We did swaddle him for the first 2 months or so but he broke free every single time. He HATED it and being that he is 17 lbs now I don't think I could make it tight enough anyways.

By the way, he started cereal a few weeks ago and he is drooling alot so maybe he is teething. Although his sister didn't get teeth until she was 9 months old (but she slept through the night at 4 months old). I don't know, maybe its gas - I have no idea!!! I'll see what my ped says when they call me back.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Same here, Parker sleeps from 8-7:30 and has been sleeping through the night since 3 months. There was a time about a month ago where we was waking up screaming for food. I think it was a growth spurt. 5-10X really does sound a bit excessive. Do you go in everytime? Does he know how to sooth himself back to sleep? Has this always happened or did it just start? Maybe is something to do with food? Is he approaching a milestone? It really could be some many different things.

My DD has been sleeping through the night 8:30-7AM since right before 3 months. She really was always a good sleeping and i think it was because she was always a good eater and we would always try and put her in the crib somewhat awake so she would fall asleep on her own. Maybe try and but him down a little later????

Re: Moms of 5 month olds

Well I think this post and the replys made you feel alittle better ?
My DD is 5 months old and is very fussy,
I know that I started giving Mariella foods and cereal, I also have found that when my daughter doesnt have a bowl movement she doesnt sleep well.
I also still have to swaddle her when she is falling asleep, when I first started letting her sleep in the crib I dont think she liked the large space she was in so I also had to keep her swaddled so she felt warm. Also does your little one have a pacifier ? Maybe these things well help find out why the baby is waking up so much .
Keep me posted.

I know how you feel and the days feel like they are never going to end and you feel this is the worst time of youre life with no sleep, but you know this time will pass just have patience and you will get through this.. Until we post some other issue that we are in ...

He very well may be teething. I've heard of babies cutting teeth as early as 4 months. DS cut his first tooth when he was 6 months old. Does he seem like he's in pain? Maybe some Tylenol or Orajel would help. Chat Icon

I spoke to my ped. He said it could very well be teething and to try tylenol one night to see if it helps. If it doesn't he said to start fruit since Drew is such a big boy, he might be hungry. If nothing changes in a week, I'm supposed to call back. If nothing changes in a week, I might jump off a bridge!!! He said he should be sleeping through the night by now and that at some point I'm probably going to have to teach him how to self soothe. YIKES!

DS (6 months old) is a pretty good sleeper but he didn't know how to self soothe - I had to let him CIO just two nights. What a big difference that has made in his sleeping!!!
