Moms of preemies.

did you/do you have to wake your DC to feed him/her at night?

our ped told us to wake DD every 4 hours at night to feed her. And most nights we have to wake her up and she is not hungry.

We go back in a few weeks and I'm hoping he says to let her sleep if she is sleeping.

TIA

nope! I never woke my boys... if they were hungry they would wake.. i didnt want to pattern them to wake up if they didnt need it.
BTW my preemie boys were on the same weight as a full term baby the whole time..

THEY WILL TELL U IF THERE HUNGRY!!!Chat Icon

Yes in the beginning. At one point we were practically force feeding him until he got the hang of it. An immature sucking reflex is a tough thing to deal with.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

yes, in the beginning we had to every 3-4 hours.

once DD had her 2 week appointment and they were happy with her weight gain and that her jaundice was gone - we are able to let her sleep.

We woke DS every four hours for probably the first three weeks or so. Then he got the hang of it and starting waking by himself.

We were told to wake him but he usually woke up on his own and was looking to eat. After a few weeks, we were told that we could let him sleep.

Re: Moms of preemies.

thanks all!

she is a good eater when she is hungry. we went through the su ck/swallow/breathe issue while she was still in the nicu. it was very frustrating.

she is almost 4 months now so i think we should let her go.

thanks again.

Yup...we did and at about 6-8 weeks we were trying so hard to wake him at night to feed him. He had finally got the whole drink/su ck/swallow thing down and was drinking well during the day. I told the dr. that I was having a hard time waking him and they gave me the OK to let him sleep up to 8 hours. Well, the 1st night he slept 8 hours and has slept through the night ever since!!! Our pediatrician told us that you only have to wake them until they reach their birth weight. That was never a problem for us since DDs woke every few hours to eat throughout the night in the beginning.
