Re: Moms that had GD
you will have to watch what you eat and take your blood sugar daily anywhere between 4-7 times depending on what the doc says. You eat a bunch of small meals a day instead of a few big meals- you need to watch your carb intake. You'll be better off avoiding white carbs (white bread, white rice, etc) and white sugar. I ate a lot of high-fiber Kashi products, brown rice, etc. It's sort of like eating on phase two of South Beach Diet. If you can keep your blood sugar pretty even w/ diet, you won't need to take insulin shots... I was able to keep my sugar stable w/ diet and I am sure this also helped me not gain all that mugh weight either- about 20 pounds total the entire pregnancy.

Re: Moms that had GD
oh no Jen!! I was hoping you passed. I had GD and feel free to FM me any questions you may have. For me, mine was controlled by diet alone. I met with a nutritionalist who came up with a diet plan for me based on various factors - current diet, weight gain, pre-preggo weight - stuff like that. She stressed exercise is important as well but I led an active lifestyle and my walk to and from Penn alone was enough exercise per my nutritionalist.
My nutritionalist was tough - I have seen less tough plans. Basically no liquids besides water and limited milk (1 glass a day). All sugar stuff - cake, candy, cookies were a no. No pizza, fast food stuff like that. Basically is was 6 small meals a day which were a balance of carbs, protein, fats fruit and veggies. Cutting out the sweets and stuff was easy for me but the small meals were harder and the meals were suppose to be eaten at certain times of the day (this was very hard for me and my nutritionalist didn't like the times I ate - but working and commuting - I didn't eat dinner before 745/8pm - what can I do - she actually told me I should eat dinner on the LIRR if I can't change my work hours - how gross). Also blood had to be taken 4 times a day to check my sugar levels.
My levels were very low with this diet to the point they started to question my GD (but I did spike when I kind cheated - but not always - my high risk dr ordered me to cheat/spike because I was starving!!)
For me, I had to see a high risk ob weekly for sonos and non stress tests to monitor the baby besides regular ob appointments.
Your baby is at bigger risk for being bigger or having hypoglycemia if it is not taken care of. Mine was and Kevin still had hypoglycemia and was in the NICU for 5 days trying to regulate his sugars. But all is fine after that. he was born only 7lbs 2 oz but 3 week early - he did always measure bigger all along though so they watched him. As for me, my GD was gone after birth and I took a glucose test a 6 week post partum to be sure.
My biggest advice is find a nutritionalist you feel comfy with - I never liked mine and my high risk dr even told me to stop talking to her and just talk to him instead when I had questions.
