Re: moms that were told they were having...

I had GD with my dd and was told the entire time i was going to have a big baby. The week i was due they told me she was btwn 8-9 lbs, and if she didnt come the weekend after she was due i would have to be induced. My dd arrived the day after she was due on her own, and had her vaginally. She was 7lbs 5ozs 19 inches long.. A PEANUT!!.. Sonos can be off.

Re: moms that were told they were having...

I was 12 days late. 2 days before I had my son we had a growth sono and the tech said he was 8.5-9 pounds. No more than that - and "she is always right"

My son was 9lbs 14 ounces. She was off by a pound. I hear they usually are off either way. They aren't always accurate! Chat Icon

Re: moms that were told they were having...

DW had a sono in the morning, and DS was supposedly around 8lbs. Her water broke that same evening, and when DS was born less than 24 hours after his 8lb sono, he was 5lbs, 14 oz..... We didn't have any tiny clothes on hand, since the entire pregnancy, we thought he was going to be big.

Re: moms that were told they were having...

I had a growth sono at about 35 weeks with my first and was told she was 6lbs 4 oz. I was induced at 39w4d because of pre-eclampsia and she was born 6lbs 1 oz so they were off with her.

However, I had a growth sono with my son at 38w because the doctors thought he was measuring big. They estimated him at 8lbs 1 oz at 38 weeks. Well, I gave it no mind and thought that they were wrong again. I gave birth one day before my due date to a bouncing 9lb 14 oz baby boy!!!! They were right. The good news is that I delivered naturally, vaginally and without an episotomy (sp) and I just tore a tiny bit. He was out in 3 pushes. Delivering a big baby is not that much different then delivering a small baby - or at least it wasn't for me. Don't worry too much about how big the baby is... our bodies are designed to deliver babies.

The big difference was the end of the pregnancies. I now know why it was a lot harder to carry him at the end then it was with my daughter.

Re: moms that were told they were having...

I had a growth sono at 31 weeks and she was about 5lbs, they estimated the birthweight at 10lbs. I had my growth sono at a specialist, my Dr admitted alot times the techs are off. Anyway I had a c-section(had a prior) 10 days early and she was 9lbs 3oz and they said she would have been about 10lbs to 10lbs 3 oz had I gone to my due date.

I was told big baby very early but my level II measurement was on target...doc kept thinking big baby though and sent me for a growth sono...measurements still okay but the commented big baby too. Up until the end they were saying big baby...even on the delivery table his head wasn't getting into place so easily and they kept saying big baby.

I delivered him vaginally - no problem and he weighed 8lbs 11oz - so big but not as big as they made him out to be.

Re: moms that were told they were having...

At my 31 week growth sono DS was estimated to be 8 1/2 at birth.

Then the morning during my labor...the resident did a growth sono and said he'd be 7 lbs 2 oz. I didn't believe this, as my daughter was 8 lbs 4 oz and they say boys are usually bigger, especially your second child. He was born a few hours later at 8lbs 5 oz like my growth sono predicted.

Good morning Jen. My doctor didn't do growth sonograms (and I have to say I am relieved he didn't because I dodn't want to know how "huge" this baby was going to be going into labor and delivery) but every time I went in for my appointments she told me I was looking to have a "big baby" close to 9 pounds. I ended up having Athan at 37 weeks and 4 days and he only weighed 7 lbs 2 ounces. WHo knows - if he would have stayed in an extra 2 and 1/2 weeks I am sure he would have weighed a lot more but luckily he came early on his own. I do know a lot of women get those growth sonos done and they are totally off though!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: moms that were told they were having...

Well it was true for me...

our baby had always been about 2-3 weeks bigger then it should have been, I didn't have GD, it was just a big baby. He was breached for a few months and never turned, so I was scheduled for a c-section, we had Scott July 9 2008 and he was.......

11lbs. 4 oz 23 inches....

we thought maybe 9-10 lbs

Re: moms that were told they were having...

If it's your first child and sonos can be quite incorrect on size, I don't know why they would consider it necessary to schedule a c/s or induce. Even the tiniest women can surprisingly deliver large babies via vbirth - some with the greatest of ease. Try not to worry unless your OB is telling you some reason they think it won't be possible. But like I said, without a history on which to base their assumptions, I can't see why they would want you to do either. Chat Icon Speak to your OB though so you can be sure you are on the same page.

Re: moms that were told they were having...

I was told DS was on the big side. I had a growth sono at 38 weeks at the hospital, he measured 9lb 1oz. Had another sono 2 days before my due date also at the hospital they told me 9lb 4oz.

I asked my Dr her thoughts on inducing and she told me she didnt recommend it for me because I wasnt dilating, and was showing no signs of labor on my own. I went even having BH at this point. She said in her experience woman whose bodies dont begin "getting ready" on their own have a higher chance of winding up in a c-section. And she said then you have to recover from labor and c-section.

After crying for 2 days in making a decision, I decided to schedule a c-section. DS weighed in at 9lb 14oz on his due date! I had an easy recovery and DS was perfect from the start so it was the right decision for us.

ETA: I didnt have GD. Also my dr would never tell me what the regular sonos said DSs weight were. She said they were often off by alot. Which is why I went to the hospital for my 2 growth sonos. She said they are generally more accurate. but I had to be mentally prepared if I did have an 8lb baby..just in case. When both growth sonos came up over 9lbs and were done by 2 highly respected individuals I felt comfortable making the decision to do a c-section

Re: moms that were told they were having...

Sydney was always measuring big, they estimated over 9lbs but I wasnt too freaked because I always heard that it could be off a lb or so. 4 days before my due date, I wasnt progressing at all, she was measuring huge and my blood pressure was starting to elevate, I went in the next day for a c-section, Sydney was 9lbs 10oz and 21 1/2 in. long!

Re: moms that were told they were having...

My dd was measuring ahead the last 6-8 weeks. They estimated if she was on time she would have been 10-10 1/2 lbs. They estimated at the hospital when I went into labor she was 9 lbs and a few ounces. I stalled at 7 cms and never progressed further and she wasn't descending properly and there was merconium when my water broke (on its own but while I was in the hospital) so I did end up with a csection - actually the OB and the fellow were taking guesses to her size right before they started the csection and the OB guessed her exact size 9lbs 4 ounces. She came at 38w 4d.

etd to add I did not have GD.

I was told that my daughter would not be over 5lbs due to the position she was in and she was 8lbs 13 ounces and 2 weeks early with a scheduled c-section.

At my level 2 it was predicted that my son would be over 10 pounds. At a later sono I was told again he would be over 10lb. He was born at 30 weeks with a scheduled c-section at 8lbs 10 ounces. So I don't place too much stock in those predictions.

They told me DD was starting to approach 10lbs, so I was induced. The induction didn't work and I wound up with a c-section. DD was only 8lbs 13 ozs. They say that the growth sono's can be off +/- 1 lb.

Re: moms that were told they were having...

I had GD and was told I was going to have a big baby. I had growth sonos at 37,38, and 39 weeks and the last one said she was measuring at 9lbs5oz. I was induced at 39w5d but it failed and I wound up have DD by c-section on her due date. She weight 8lbs.7oz which was almost a pound less then they estimated. I would have wound up have a c/s anyway no matter how small or big she was because my pelvis was to narrow.

Re: moms that were told they were having...

I had a growth sono at 37w, 2d and dd was measuring 8lb, 3oz

I was induced at 39 weeks due to a blood disorder and wound up with a c-section due to lack of dialation and signs of fetal distress. My dd was born at 9lb, 8oz

I had the most amazing delivery and recovery, I cannot wait to do it again
