Moms who had to go back to school or work

I just got home from the hospital last night and have been crying ever since thinking about leaving my little man. Is this normal? School starts in three weeks and I just don't think physcially and mentally I'm ready to leave him. I think part of the reason is that I only have such a short time with him, but then again even if I had 6 weeks I don't think I'd be ready either. I don't want to waste the next three weeks crying about this and not enjoy the little time I have. What did you do to get past it?

TIA,
Kelly

Congrats! Im going back to work (in a school) in 3 weeks as well. I did have a year off with DD, so I am grateful for that, but it's still hard.

sorry I don't have better advice Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

It is perfectly normal to feel that way. I think every mom that has to return to work or school has a hard time leaving their lil' ones.

It does get easier. I had 8 weeks of maternity leave and the first drive into work, I cried the whole way there and in the parking lot. Each day, it began to get a little easier and then before you know it, you have a routine and it just feels like the norm.

Hang in there! It does get easier!

I only had 6 weeks, and honestly, it was very hard to leave DS. I can't imagine after only 3 weeks. Why so short?

With time, it does get easier. It's hard to believe now, but it does.

I just went back to work this week after being home for 14 weeks. The first day I think I was in shock, yesterday I was sad. I know it will get better but it is rough. Chat Icon

Same here, I was home for 16 weeks and returned to work on Monday. Nights are the worst for me because I feel like I missed out on so much during the day and I hate putting my DC to bed because I want more time with them and when I wake up in the morning I know I have to go through it all over again Chat Icon

Re: Moms who had to go back to school or work

Don't think about it just yet, enjoy your time with your DS. I went back to work after 8 weeks because I had to (requirement for me to complete my doctoral program) and it was extremely difficult, I dind't think I could do it. Now, 5 weeks later, I still cry some days - I don't really think it gets easier, at least not yet.

Just focus on spending time with him. Try to enjoy spending time with him. Be prepared for difficult days when you may not know why he's crying and whether or not you have any idea of what you are doing. Just go with the flow.

Weekends will become a priority and you will live for those days. I leave my house at 7 and return at about 7 PM so I'm away from my angel 12 hours - it kills me. If you get home early or maybe have summers off, you will have lots of time with your baby, more than others.

You can always come on here for support, lots of us have gone through or are going through the same thing.Chat Icon

Stop thinking about 3 weeks from now -
Enjoy your time home with him.

I can tell you that the anticipation and uncertainty of going back was FAR worse than actually going back and getting myself into a routine...........

I also had 6 months home with him, so I am not in the same position as you - but I don't think it's EVER 'easy' to go back

I cried and and still am not "past" it 5 weeks later.

it's going to be hard every day to leave, but remaining gone for the day will get easier b/c your routine will be established...and then you will get antsy again right before it's time to go home...when your nose will remember his scent, your hands will remember the softness of his skin, and your body will ache with the urge to feel his tiny weight against your chest.

congratulations and good luck. Chat Icon

I'm in Grad School and the Semester starts in three weeks. It's either go back early or loose the whole semester. DH and I talked about it and we can't afford to loose the time. I just have no interest in doing anything other than spending time with my little one.

Thanks all for your support. I never realized how much you can love someone so quickly before I heard my DS cry for the first time. Chat Icon
