How do you set the camera to have the baby in focus and the rest of the background out of focus?

I know I use the portrait setting. I don't know if it's the same on all cameras but on the Nikon SLR it's the lady's head.

Thanks, I'll try that. Once on that setting, you don't need to change any of the manual functions on the camera do you?

photoshop. there's an option for you to blur the background as little or as much as you want.

I use the potrait setting too if I have my regular lens on.
If I put my 300mm lens (which I almost always use), I don't need to do anything. The background blurs on the automatic setting.

Most times I use automatic setting and when I focus in on one specific thing the rest of the background blurs out.

turn down the fstop to about 3 or so and focus on the subject in the manual setting
