Moms who use a family member to watch their DC

My DDs will be going to my cousin's house in September when I go back to work.

What kind of rules did you give to the family member? ie. babyproofing, going out to stores, driving, meal time, activities.

I am just nervous with anyone else watching my kids, I need some advice. Thanks!

I wouldn't give them rules other than what the babies can or cannot eat, and that they must use a carseat. Other than that you tell them about the schedule that has worked for you and let them figure out what works for them -- the babies simply aren't going to behave the same for your cousins as they do home with you.

I didn't give any rules. They are watching my baby, I didn't feel right telling them they couldn't drive with my baby, go to stores, etc. That stuff doesn't bother me, anyway.

ITA. My MIL, SIL and my Mom watch Andrew. I would buy them the food and formula/milk so I was sure they were eating what I wanted. Other then that they do what they want.

I totally trust their judgement that is why I let them watch himChat Icon

I would still give whatever rules you would give a non-family member who was watching your child (babysitter, nanny, au pair or daycare). Just because they are family doesn't mean they will do what *you* think is in DC's best interest. If there's things you don't care about, then don't even bring them up, but if there are rules that you won't let DH get away with not following, those rules need to be told to whomever is watching DC.

If you want to give rules, I suggest you only give the ones you're really adamant about. If you bombard her with what to do and what not to do, eventually she's going to ignore the rules altogether.
The only thing I really try to get my mom and MIL to follow is eating times and nap times. Everything else, I kind of let them do their own thing.

I am not concern with eating times and nap times, but I am concerned about choking hazards and since they are twins, leaving one in the stroller while she is bringing the other into the house.

DH says I need to talk to her to workout, perhaps bringing them to the backyard and taking them out, into the house that way. Instead of leaving the other one left inthe stroller out in the open on the busy street she lives on. Chat Icon

I just don't want her to think I am being a psycho but I just worry about them.

My mom watches Steven. There really are no rules. I'll tell her when he can have certain things in regards to food, but she basically does whatever she wantsChat Icon

He is allowed to do certain things at her house that he can't do at home. For example, she lets him play with toys while he eats. I don't. As young as he is, he knows the toys go away at meal time. At my moms, if you take the toy away, he criesChat Icon Chat Icon

Maybe if you go there a few times to hang out and let her take care of them while you guys hang. I think that's the best way. Or, when you go to her house alone, bring them both in this way she sees how it should be done.

Honestly, I know you worry, but I'm sure she would know better than to leave one outside. I know, it's difficult when you go back to work not to worryChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
