Moms with half day kindergarten districts...
If you're not a SAHM, do you plan to enroll your DC in private full day kind. and start in your district at 1st grade? When do you figure all this out? Anyone have experience with this?

We enrolled in private for a few months. Pulled him out & went to the half day program with a district kindergarten enrichment program in the am.

Re: Moms with half day kindergarten districts...
My sisters district is half day. She lucked out because my BIL was able to get a night job so he was home to put her 3 kids on and off the bus.
However I know there are some montessori schools and some other nursery schools that have full day kindergarten programs that you can enroll your child in. My sister looked into it briefly, but then my BIL switched his hours and she didn't really need to research it further.

Re: Moms with half day kindergarten districts...
My local school that Noah is going to is a half day programme. So the problem with this was that my daycare was doing school pick ups at local school, but our school wasn’t close enough, I looked into a service that would pick him up at school and take him to daycare, but that was too expensive. I didn’t want to take him out of daycare. So in the end I found a local child minder (in home daycare) who is going to pick him up from school and have him all afternoon. He is starting next week! Wish me luck! Its actually much cheaper…but my heart broke taking him out of daycare because I love my daycare so much!!

Re: Moms with half day kindergarten districts...
I have one friend who sent her ds to private kindy and then public school for 1st grade rather than do 1/2 day kindy in the public school.
I'm pretty sure you are in the same district I am, the 2 kids around my block who went to K last year went to the a friend's house whose mom was a SAHM for the other half of the day.
I've heard that if you do St. Elizabeth Ann Seton kindergarten (the regional elementary catholic school by us) the kids from our district do a half day at the public school and a half day at the catholic school.
I just remembered that one of dd's friends who will go to a different elementary school in our district (I think it's the one you will go to) plans on sending her dd for an enrichment program for the other half of the day at the preschool the girls are going to now.

We are pretty sure we'll do Catholic school at least for Kindergarten and then decide whether to keep him there or switch to public school.

I am. I know I have time, but I'm looking into Maplewood now just to see what my options are - but the problem with them is, I assume I'd stick with them for summer camp and it seems ridiculously expensive (unless I just have no clue).
I was just thinking about this lately with back to school - I don't see how people do this - the half day is not really half day - it's 2.5 hours!
Plus, I feel like it's a little anti-climatic. How exciting is it to start kindergarten, but then I think it takes away from it if I have to enroll them in a separate school and then move them over to public school the following year.
Maybe by that time I can be a SAHM

My neighbor did this - she sent her daughter to full day kindergarten in a Catholic school and then switched her to public for 1st grade. It worked out well for her and she was happy with it. I'm not sure what we'll do - will depend on DH's schedule at the time I guess. Right now he's on nights so he would be home to put him on and off the bus.
It is SO expensive to send them to full day kindergarten in the Catholic School where I live (upstate NY). It's close to $4K for KINDERGARTEN! When I am already paying $8K in taxes, that is really hard to swallow... But I guess if you have to pay for daycare in addition to school anyway it might make sense!
Good luck

Re: Moms with half day kindergarten districts...
We will be sending my DD to Catholic School for kindergarten and then most likely put her in public school in 1st grade.
Since our district is 1/2 day, a majority of the children at the catholic school will be from our town. This made me feel comfortable so when I have to transition her again, at least she won't be doing it alone.

This is our tentative plan as well. DS is only 2, but we are sort of looking at the local Catholic schools to which we like
I keep hoping the district will go to full day by then!
