Moms with kids with Egg allergy and dying hard boil easter eggs? UPDATE - allergist called back
UPDATE:
It's a no go on the eggs. I guess I will have to keep her home - although they ask parents to not bring in candy most brought cookies the past few holidays and between the eggs and the candy/cookies she will be upset. I just hate to keep her home b.c she missed 2.5 weeks of school b.c of illness. She only just went back this week.
I called the allergist this morning to ask but I never heard back from their office.
I got an email that DD's class is requested to bring in a hard boil egg tomorrow and they are dying them on Thursday.
We don't know what DD is allergic to (she had unexplained severe hives) they are waiting to test her - she has to be hive free for a few weeks and with environmental allergies that is putting off the testings. Right now she is on no eggs.
If your child has an egg allergy what do you do about dying eggs? Can they touch the eggs to dye them - and just not eat them - or am I going to have to keep her home (I know she will freak if 17 other children are dying eggs and she can't). I just don't know if it is okay to allow her to handle the eggs even if she doesn't eat them.

Just a thought - can she wear rubber gloves so she doens't have contact w/ the eggs?

Re: Moms with kids with Egg allergy and dying hard boil easter eggs?
Instead of hardboiling eggs, my Mom blows the eggs (poke 2 holes in the egg, 1 on top and one on the bottom and literally blow into it until the entire egg pours out of the bottom hole) out of the shell and colors the shells with my neice and nephews. Maybe you can do this instead? IDK if it's the shell that would cause the allergy though.

See that is the problem I have no idea IF she is allergic to eggs or not - but she is off them for now just in case (she is on a very strict elimination diet). I called the allergist office and left a message for EITHER one of the nurses or the doctor b.c I have to bring this in tomorrow for her. She is 3 (4 in June) so not sure if blowing the eggs would be good for her. She is "high spirited" and I think it would break on her - plus they asked for hard boiled. I really don't want to keep her home - but I know she will freak out if the other 17 kids are doing the dying and she can't do it. She is already disappointed b.c she won't be getting an easter bunny this year.

If she's on no eggs, I would hesitate to send her in. I'm not sure if the egg itself is the allergy or the shell could trigger something. What if she goes in and does have a reaction? Can the school handle it? And if she does have a reaction, will that push her testing back? Or will that be the information you need?

Re: Moms with kids with Egg allergy and dying hard boil easter eggs?
I would tell the teacher about the allergy.. maybe they can decorate/paint wooden eggs instead? or decorate plastic eggs with stickers>
I know that with my kids, anytime a child has had a certain allergy, the teacher has adjusted the lesson plan/activity to accommodate the child so that they aren't left out of the activity.
If that isn't an option, honestly, I'd be petrified to send her in.. :(

Personally, I'd send her in.
If she were THAT allergic to eggs, so much that after boiling that touching the shell she'd have a reaction, then she'd have already had a major acute reaction in the past from ingesting them. You'd remember a reaction like that.

Re: Moms with kids with Egg allergy and dying hard boil easter eggs?
I asked the teacher about this and both teachers (both my kids have egg allergies) said that they actually touch the eggs no so much the kids. I would speak to the teacher and let her pick the color to dip it and maybe hold the teachers hand to dip it.

Well she DID have a severe allergic reaction - head to toe severe hives and severe facial swelling. The problem is we DON"T know what caused it. The chance is that it is something she has recently become allergic to. She had eggs the day before and several other things - nothing that she has never eaten multiple times in the past. Unfortunately both my father and my DH suddenly became very allergic to foods they had eaten their entire life. She has been on an strict elimination diet so until we do testing we have to assume it could be one of the things we have taken out.
Thank you all!
The allergist called back and said absolutely no to handling the eggs at all - said to either keep her home that day OR exclude her from the activity - so I will have to speak with her teacher tomorrow and see what alternatives they can come up with. I hate keeping her home b.c she missed like 2.5 weeks of school with this ridiculous illness and only went back to school this week. But I know since it is the last class before easter I bet a lot of parents will bring in some candy or cookies which will also be an issue. If I don't send her DD#2 will miss another of her music classes (she missed 4 in a row - and she missed last week the 1st week of the new session) so I hate to have her miss more as well. It is just that DD is excitable and I can see her getting upset if she can't do something the rest of the class is participating in.

Uggggg That sucks Christine!!!
Why can't you give her a bunny? Maybe we can make a special type of bunny that she can have?

Re: Moms with kids with Egg allergy and dying hard boil easter eggs? UPDATE - allergist called back
There are no eggs in my house either due to egg allergies and I've been giving this some thought...
I love the idea of painting wooden eggs and having it as a keepsake to add to a basket each year...
And my second idea was to dye those really large campfire marshmallows and to buy the food coloring markers from Michael's to decorate them...I thought I would try to get creative and do homemade dyes out of strawberries, blueberries, and so on to try to cut down on the food dyes....my kids are super excited about doing it too!

What about painting and decorating plastic eggs with stickers and glitter and stuff?
Then maybe put things in them and hide them as a lil easter egg hunt?

I found styrofoam eggs at Michaels so she is going to try to use those tomorrow.

Those are a fabulous idea - but we couldn't find marshmellows that didn't contain items she couldn't have She is on such a strict elimination diet that it is really tough for her and us right now.
I was able to find styrofoam eggs at Michaels though so she will try those tomorrow.

What useful information- I never would have thought that handling a boiled egg would be bad.
I totally understand about feeling bad about her missing out on class and activities. I hate that Madelyn has never gotten to take part in her class activities that involve food because of her dairy allergy.
I hope like crazy you get an answer soon.

Re: Moms with kids with Egg allergy and dying hard boil easter eggs? UPDATE - allergist called back
I was wondering what the answer to this would be, I had no clue as a mom with a kid with an egg allergy. Glad you posted the update, but it sucks that your DD can't participate. These food allergies are so unfair.
How come she is on an elimination diet, and hasn't gotten a blood test. Wouldn't that be easier to pinpoint what she is allergic to?
