Moms with milk allergic DC...
This is more for those of you with older DC, but they say a lot of babies outgrow their milk protein allergy by a year old. How did you go about seeing if your child was still allergic to milk? And if they were still allergic, what reaction did you notice? And does anyone have a pediatric allergist they can recommend? TIA!

Re: Moms with milk allergic DC...
I will check out that Dr. thank you! I am beginning to suspect Ava does not have a milk allergy as well, based on all the foods she has been eating. So I'm just curious. I'd really like to see an allergist to see for sure.

Yes, but lactose is a sugar, not a milk protein. Thanks, though

Re: Moms with milk allergic DC...
we're going to the ped next week for brendan's 1 year appointment and i'm planning to ask about it then so i'll let you know if i get any info. i also thought brendan might not be allergic to milk because on a couple of occasions i gave him a little piece of cheese or a spoonful or two of my yogurt and he was fine. so i bought him some yobaby yogurt and gave it to him and right away he broke out in hives, all around his lips and mouth got swollen, and his eyes got puffy and oozy. a friend of mine whose son has a lot of allergies was telling me that a lot of times kids don't have a reaction the first few times they're exposed. she also said that milk allergies are cumulative. the yogurt incident was about 2 months ago I think and I'm afraid to try it again.

Interesting. Does he also have a soy allergy? Because Ava does, supposedly, and what the heck am I supposed to give her when she's a year old? I'm just confused. I really need to ask the dr. next time I see him. Let me know how your ped. appt. goes!

Re: Moms with milk allergic DC...
My dd is allergic to milk and eggs.
We met with an allergist (Dr Stacey Radinsky in Merrick whom I LOVE) and once we got the hang of what we were dealing with, got her tested (both blood and skin prick tests) we now see her every 4-5 mths for various follow ups, etc.
We will retest her annually to check her numbers and reaction (wheal marks) to the allergins....hopefully they will eventually come back negative but we are not expecting that for at least another year or so. My dd is 2.5 yrs old.
We had her first re-check last fall and her numbers were even HIGHER than they were originally but from what I'm told that doesn't really matter and they can still outgrow the allergies eventually.
re: feeding babies after 1 yr old....It can be tough, esp. with a soy allergy as well, since that includes veg. oil, etc. I am able to buy a certain amount of foods from the supermarket but otherwise I rely on fresh fruits/veggies and homemade breads, muffins, etc.

Re: Moms with milk allergic DC...
oh and I just re-read your original post....I don't hear of many babies outgrowing at a year old. To me that sounds really early.....maybe those cases were more intolerances rather than real allergies?
As of reactions, Emily always had immediate facial swelling, hives and vomiting. We could tell immediately that she was reacting to the foods given to her.

Used to go to them myself and I loved Dr. Wertheim. he's so nice. I'm curious to see these answers myself b/c I'm still nervous to give her any dairy for fear of what will happen. She's been so happy on the hypoallergenic formula. I don't want cranky baby back!

I know, me too. I'm terrified of what is going to happen once he goes off the formula.

Re: Moms with milk allergic DC...
Brianna had an allergy to milk when we first started her on whole milk but she was ok with the yogurt. The Dr did say it was the increased amount of protein that some kids struggle with. SOme of his kids can have a piece of pizza and be ok but add a glass of milk and some cheese and they are sick. We have been giving Brianna rice milk since 1 year old and just the other day we tried to do the whole milk again and she has been ok with it. We'll see how it goes.

Re: Moms with milk allergic DC...
Ok well Steven's been on Neocate since he's 1 1/2 months old. At 8 months the dr said to try yogurt and I did and he had a horrible reaction! After that I was afraid to try ANY food!!!!! At our one year appt dr said that we needed to get blood work but my husband kept putting it off so at the next appt I made him ask the dr to also give a prescription for food allergy test and he did. So when we took him for his one year bloodwork( at 15 months) they took a second vile for the allergy test. Turns out he is allergic to milk and chocolate but not soybeans so we started him on soy milk this week! Never thought about going to an allergist but now you are all making me wonder

No, he's doing great on soy formula right now. If she is allergic to soy I think you can give her rice milk. That's what I was drinking when I was still BFing.
