Moms with underweight todders
Is your child light due to eating little and/or fast metabolism?
Is your child drinking toddler formula or whole milk?
15m DS was drinking enfagrow toddler formula but we started giving him mixed whole milk and formula.
DS is 50th percentile height but only 5th percentile weight. He isn't a picky eater but doesn't have a large appetite. I feel like we feed him all day and all night but he is constantly running around. He also prefers fruits and veggies over more fattening foods.
At his 12m appointment, he wasn't even on the growth chart but now he's at least on the chart.

Re: Moms with underweight todders
I think my DS is light mostly due to a fast metabolism. He is a picky eater, but he does eat and he is still nursing frequently!
He is in the 25th% for height and under the 10th% for weight.
His ped is not concerned in the least, especially since both my DH and I are tiny. For most of my childhood, I wasn't even on the charts. I guess it was expected that our kid would be small too!

Re: Moms with underweight todders
dd is a lightweight. at 12 months she was 17 pounds, by 15-18 months only 19 and at 21 months she is 21 pounds. which has her in the 3rd to 5th percentile. she is also in the 50th for height.
she is a big eater, good eater. doctor is not concerned because she is going up in weight just at her own pace.
she has whole milk or 2%.

Re: Moms with underweight todders
DH and I are big people as are our families. Abby has ALWAYS been in the 10th precentile for weight with the exception of one time when she dropped to the 5th because of a well visit scheduled after a bout of a stomach bug. She caught up. In any event, I found many highly caloric foods made with healthy fat to get more calories in her, and still, we found her to be a behavioral eater - it had nothing to do with her metabolism. She just doesn't like to eat a hell of a lot. The doctors were never concerned.
I guarantee if you look up the recommended serving sizes for toddlers, you'd be shocked at how small they are supposed to be and how much we as a nation are OVERfeeding our kids.

Re: Moms with underweight todders
My dd is very tiny. At her 18mo visit I had recently stopped nursing and her weight dropped and didn't stay on her curve. The drs were concerned and had us go for blood testing but everything is normal. I think I just have a tiny girl, she eats a good amount and is very verbal, tells me when she is hungry what she wants. I am not worried

Re: Moms with underweight todders
My DD is petite. She is 2 and I still give her whole milk, even mixed with ovaltine at times. I let her eat snacks when she wants along with sitting down for 3 meals w/us. She drinks juice, eats fruits and veggies. I try to stay away from anything w/too much sugar only because she's literally bouncing off the walls.
However, Grandpa doesn't listen and gives her whatever she wants. I think she just has a fast metabolism and she's very active.

Re: Moms with underweight todders
DS is very small, he is back in the 5th percentile now but for a few months he had fallen off of the charts.
He doesn't have a huge appetite and also prefers fruits/veggies to meats. He also has a dairy allergy so getting high fat foods into him can be tough - although this has been getting better and he can tolerate dairy in small doses now.
Our PED has us give him 1/2 a packet of Carnation Instant breakfast in milk(soy) with breakfast. She said to give him nutella - she doesn't want us to give him PB yet because of other food allergies he has (milk, eggs, blueberries).
I try to slip extra calories in, he loves veggies, so I try to add a little butter to his - although he prefers veggies raw so it doesn't always work. When I make him fries, I make them round instead of sticks and I put soy cream cheese on them.
He has gotten back up into the 5th percentile and seems to be hanging out there. Our PED isn't concerned as long as he is on the growth chart and hs percentile doesn't drastically change in a short amount of time. Some kids are just small
