Moms, would you let your child make their own caramel apple???

I want to do caramel apple favors in addition to the coloring books and was thinking of doing a "make your own" as an additional craft.

would you feel comfortable allowing your child (with help, either your's or another adult) to dip the apple into the warm caramel?

I would have it kept warm in my slow cooker so there won't be any "hot" surface to get burned on.

what do you think?

I don't mind the mess that is made so that is not a concern for me. I am more looking at the safety aspect (and I guess, if YOU are concerned about potential mess of clothes etc)

TIA

Yes I would - I think it depends on the age of the child - my son is 14 months and obviously it would be a disaster as he insists on doing everything himself but my 4 year old would love it - she keeps asking for one and I think I might allow her to make her own this year.

Yup!~ But I love to bake and cook and was helping my mom at a young age. I plan to let Evan help out when he is old enough too.

I say go for it. I think it is a really cute idea.

I think it would be fine. Just make sure you have enough around for someone to grab in case their child makes a mess and it gets on their fingers, hands, hair, clothes etc. Wet paper towels or something like that.

Yes I would, with my help of course.

I probably wouldn't let him eat the caramel though because of possible choking, so I would have to eat it.Chat Icon Chat Icon

ohh, this is a good point...

should I have peeled apples for the smaller kids?

I don't think I have a problem with the caramel so much as the apple skin...but should I? Chat Icon

actually Luce still really can't eat apples b/c they give him insane gas Chat Icon but we will have a few kids bet. 1-2. Chat Icon

I would. I think it's a really cute activity. I was going to make my own but Stop and Shop had them for a dollar each and it just takes one more thing off my plate. I love the DIY idea though! Chat Icon

Not sure if the caramel will stick to the peeled apples-plus they might brown faster.....hmm Maybe just some peeled apple slices in the pre cut bags you can get at the store or costco? They come individually wrapped. Then they can dip those?

oh bugger. I have a few apples so I will try this weekend. I am getting the apples from our favorite farm, so I'll have to cut them myself if need be.

a few kids will be arriving on Friday so I was thinking of having someone take thm early sat morning to do some U-pick while I set up the house!!!

Actually, like neener said, I think if they dip the actual slices that will be easier for the kids since the apples may be too heavy and fall off.

I would - that's a great idea !! But I'm not at all uptight about that kind of stuff ..........

The only think I might suggest is peeling the apples for the smaller kids so they don't choke on the skin. Chat Icon

also be careful where you set up the carmel - it will most likely attract bees - and this time of year they are more likely to sting because they are slower and less flowers to go to
