Money-saving ideas for your home
I saw a good show on HGTV a while ago called "House Detective" and they listed a bunch of energy/money saving ideas. I wrote them down below, does anyone else have anything to add?
Water heater - if older, wrap an insulation blanket around it. Newer heaters have insulation built in.
Door sweeps to minimize drafts from outside / garage.
Double pane windows - more costly to purchase but insulates much better.
Foam weatherstripping around doors and windows - can do it yourself and lasts 5 to 10 years.
Replace old refrigerator with Energy-Star model. Biggest energy waster in the kitchen.
Fireplace sucks up hot air to the outside. Install glass doors on front of fireplace for winter use.
Roof vents cool off attic or second floor. Two vents per section or room are optimal.
Faucet aerator - mesh filter makes water flow look opaque instead of clear.
Low flow toilets save water - my Dad would just put a soda bottle filled with water inside the tank.
Install below-floor insulation - must be R19 insulation for attics / foundation.

Great tips!! Replacing the refrigerator is a huge money saver. One of our rentals has an older model and the utility bill for the vacant apartment was. We were told to unplug the old frig and turn off the thermostat. The bill went down by over 50%.
