Moral dilemma of a 5 year old
So my DS has a pretty severe peanut allergy and he is well trained to ask before he eats anything if it has peanuts. He was having an ice cream party at school today, so we had discussed this ahead of time. DH talked to the teacher about it too.
Well he just came home and told me that he couldnt ask before he ate his ice cream because the teachers played the quiet table game, and the first kid who talked, their whole table was out.
So he ate the vanilla only and asked the teacher to read the label after he ate it and they were allowed to talk.
Of course school is closed now for over a week, and I cant hear the teachers side.
My poor kid, his health vs his table winning. The moral dilemma of a 5 year old.

Awww that is so sad and scary...
Dont his teachers know about his allergy and know to look before serving him anything????
I think its great that you have him trained to ask before, lots of to you for teaching him to do so...
I just hope that this is something his teachers are doing w/o any prompting from him anyway... KWIM?

me too, they have been trained to use the epipen and we talk to them about it all the time. I am hoping that they checked first Its a scary thing, because my first instinct is to trust no one, but I have no choice.

As a teacher I ALWAYS am aware of what is being served if a child has allergies....and kudos to your DS for being so responsible at such a young age!!!! That is a teacher's dream!!!

awww - how cute is he.
I would hope the teachers would check by now - but I understand not being able to fully trust anyone.

Re: Moral dilemma of a 5 year old
As teachers we are always made aware of allergies that the school is aware of. I double check everything that comes into my classroom for potential allergies before it is served. The teacher should have done the same.
Just a note for what is to come--- I teach 7th grade, and on my last week the students asked if they could have a party. I said I can't tell you to have a party for me, but if you guys want to plan who is bringing in what food and give me the list than yes. (I already knew there were no food allergies in this class). Well one girl elected herself to be the organizer. The first thing I hear out of her mouth, ok does anyone have an food allergies. I was very proud of her.

Re: Moral dilemma of a 5 year old
I have a different opinionon the whole matter...I kind of think it was thoughtless of them to have a ice cream party. Alot I mean alot of icecream will say manufactured in the same plant where peanut and nuts are processed etc... #2...Did they use a seperate spoon for each flavor? this kind of stuff makes me sick... I hope hope hope hes ok! I think teachers need to take all allergiesinto consideration and then think about a class party. I knowa little girl that got deathy ill because friendlys double dipped a spoon. My friends kid has a allergy soooooo bad it he does not outgrow it he willneed aide for awhile--he cant even let a old crust flake like from a high chair touch him or haveit on his sisters breath. Allergies are noooooooooo joke. #3--on the quiet timething..maybe the teacher can say next time..."now...before we areall quiet..is there anything anyone has to say thatis very important?" be quiet or the whole table gets it is intimdiating to a kid.. I am so sorry your son this experience.

thanks, I was OK with the ice cream party- we new about it in advance so we could prepare, and they had those individual serving cups. If it had peanuts Ryan wouldnt have had it and since he is not a huge ice cream fan he would not have cared. But yeah, it would have been nice if they had given them time for their last words.

That's awful! You would think your sons teacher would KNOW TO ASK HIM if he could have the ice cream. As far as I know Breyer's is the only company that claims to be peanut free.

Re: Moral dilemma of a 5 year old
I would defiantly address this to the teacher. Your son shouldnt feel he cant ask that question for the fear of loosing something. thats just not right!
