More stupid questions
I'm not sure how to phrase this but....We've been TTC since December - obviously with no luck. I have an appt with my ob/gyn next week. What should I expect? What are the first steps? Will I be started on hormones first or are there other things to try before hormones?
Thanks and

Re: More stupid questions
Honestly depending how old you are they may have you wait. You should insist on having whatever testing done that you want. You probably want a full blood wor up including thyroid testing. You may also want to have them check your progesterone level-I think this is done at a certain time in your cycle.

Re: More stupid questions
At this point, your OB may not do anything. They usually have you wait 1 full year of TTC if you are under 35 and 6 months of TTC if over 35.
Are you temping and using OPKs? If not, I would start there.

Re: More stupid questions
I also have an appt. with my ob/gyn the first week of may. my 2ww is over next thursday - if those results aren't good, then i will also need the answers to these questions. so thank you! and please let us know how your dr. visit goes - any questions/test i could be prepared to ask for. i know i def want my dh tested asap at this point. . maybe you shoudl consider that too (if you haven't already).

Re: More stupid questions
I forgot to add that I'm 37. I don't *feel* old but in terms of TTC, probably pushing the envelope.
My 2ww ends next Thursday too! I'm pretty sure this won't be my month tho.
DH is not as concerned about my age and our lack of TTC success as I am so he's not been too enthusiastic about going for tests himself. At least he's supportive about ME going for tests
So, I'll ask the dr for a complete work up and a thyroid test too. I will let you know what she says!

Re: More stupid questions
The first thing to do is have certain hormones tested, and receive a full physical.
Have them run a thyroid panel, (tsh, t3, t4 and anti thyroid antibodies)
Prolactin, testosterone, dhea, fasting insulin (igtt), glucose testing (gtt), cholesterol
On day 3 of your AF, it's important to have FSH, LH, and estradoil tested.
On about 7 dpo, progesterone is another hormone to test.
Having an internal u/s of your ovaries and uterus is also something your doctor should check.

Is all of this "standard" procedure or should I be prepared to request this? (I'll probably go in prepared to request it anyway but I'm just checking. I've already prepared a TTC folder with a printout of my FF charts. I am sure my dr will be pleased to see me and my portfolio come walking in!)

LOL this is funny :) Jennifer, it all depends on your ob/gyn and how involved in fertility they are. A lot of ob/gyns aren't but you may be fortunate to have one who is.
These are standard tests done by reproductive endocrinologists. However, any doctor can do them since it's blood work.
I actually had my endocrinologist run a lot of these tests when I was there for a thyroid check up.

Re: More stupid questions
Thanks Michelle.
I'm not sure how "into" fertility this dr is, to be honest. I'll see what she says and start looking for an RE as well.
Comparitively speaking, I haven't even really gotten started on this TTC journey but it feels so much like work - the 5:30am temp reading, the charting, the repeated analyzing through out the day of the chart. So I do have this image of me striding into the gyn's office with a power point presentation and some "action items."

Re: More stupid questions
I know for me when I went to my OB, I had been trying for about 5 months , she ran a few blood tests, the typical ones to check hormones, did a full exam etc, and said to wait a little longer obviously if the blood work was OK.
Now I know for anyone over 35, she suggested not waiting over 6 months before seeing an RE.
So I have a feeling your DR will likely order the same tests and reccomend seeing someone in a few months if nothing happens.
Try NOT to think the worst.
Sometimes these boards as helpful as they are, make you crazy. Seeing someone with a "problem" inevitably makes you wonder if you will have a "problem" as well...and the added stress is not good.
Will be praying you get your BFP SOON!

Someone mentioned that about the stress factor recently, esp because several friends/family members are my age and older and have had problems.
ANd part of my "problem" I am sure is that I'm not a very patient person.
