Morning Meeting

I learned about Morning Meeting in undergrad, and now it's being implemented in my school. Has anyone used this in their classroom? Is it really successful in building a community? The group I'm getting has quite the reputation, and I'm hoping it ends some of the problems they've had.

Re: Morning Meeting

I went on an interview for a private school that did this every morning. They said it worked wonderfully. I never have experienced it first hand though.

Re: Morning Meeting

I started doing MM with my first graders. It is from the "city" routine with a LI spin on it. We are not mandated to do it but I reseached and my frined from the city helped me back my blaockboard and we made everything magnetic so the Morning meeting is an interactive math lesson. It is great and the kids love it!!Chat Icon

Re: Morning Meeting

My building is starting this because it goes along with our new Math series from Harcourt. (Saxon) Our entire MM along with our math lesson is totally scripted. I'm not sure how I feel about the scripted part yet.

Re: Morning Meeting

I teach first grade and we do morning meetings. We discuss the calender, weather, schedule, do interactive writing and shared writing. It changes somewhat throughout the year.

Re: Morning Meeting

How does the morning meeting effect the climate in the classroom? Are kids more accepting of one another?

Have you noticed any difference with how the kids interacted before and after it was implamented?

Re: Morning Meeting

Ive subbed for numerous teachers that do this.

Mostly for 3rd.4th, 5th grades.

It's more of a social thing than "business" Chat Icon

Everyone says good morning to eachother, one by one, around the circle.
and anyone that wants to share anything has some time to share. (a trip to the zoo, winning a soccer game). I found it kinda went too long, tangents, boys goofing off with silly stories.

I hope Im remembering correctly.

Then Im also recalling some "circle" situations where we did go over work, did readalouds/discussions etc.

But I remember not caring for the morning meeting. I think Id make it more structured, esp in those grades.

I am sure different schools do different things, but when I did it in Kindergarten, we did meeting in the Responsive Classroom format.

Maybe it is old school? I took a workshop on it like nine years ago. I loved it!

Your school may give one to you, or they may have a copy in your professional library, but you really should get the book. The Morning Meeting Book
