Mother Daughter Permit?
We are buying a house that has a rental and a tenant in there already. We are going to check out this week to get it legalized. DH is a cop and we don't want to risk anything and our lawyer advised us to legalize it.... How much extra is it to legalize it??? Do you pay the town ior does it go into your mortage? Is it only good for a year?? Is it worth it?? ANY HELP would be GREATLY appreciated... TIA

Re: Mother Daughter Permit?
I think you need to get a permit, but I also think it affects your taxes. I would definetely call the town. They will know for sure.

Re: Mother Daughter Permit?
you have to go to the town and ask for the zoning to be changed (like when you see those signs on peoples lawns)
there is a difference b/t a legal two family and a mother daughter...a mother daughter the tenants have to be related, and the owner must live in the house - in a legal two family, any two families can live in it.
and your taxes will
and the permits cost money too

Re: Mother Daughter Permit?
Hi I sent you a FM...you can also ask about a permit for a legal accessory apartment. That's what we have and the apartment is a 1BR, livingroom, kitchen, dining room and fuill bath.

Re: Mother Daughter Permit?
What town do you live in? There are differences depending on where you are.
The permit will cost and you'll pay that to the town. They may send an inspector out to check to make sure it's to code. If not, you'll have to bring it to code before you can get the permit.

Re: Mother Daughter Permit?
I'm not familiar with their process. Just take it a step at a time.
Go to the town and find out what's required. If you feel overwhelmed at that point, you could hire an "expeditor".
The expeditor deals with pretty much everything except whatever construction work may be required to make the apartment meet code, as required by the town.
Good luck!
