Moving and boarding cats for the day
We're going to moving pretty soon and I am thinking of having my cats boarded at the vet for a few hours while the movers are at my apt. They are due for their annual visits anyway, so I am thinking its the safest place for them to be when the move happens. I'm afraid of them getting scared and trying to run away or just the trauma of all the noise and strangers in the apt. My older cat is extremely high strung and vocal and I'm wondering if having the vet give her a sedative would be OK? She has never been boarded before and I can not imagine her being OK with it. Does anyone know what they give to cats to calm them down and how safe it is?
Any other suggestions on how to handle this move would be appreciated too! Thanks!

Re: Moving and boarding cats for the day
I would talk it over with you vet boarding for the day sounds like a good idea.
I use to work at a vet in the kenel I don't remeber them ever sedating a cat for a boarder if it's just for the day.
unless you know someone who can keep him in a room in there house for that period of time.
we kept our cats locked in the basement then in one of the rooms while we moved they freaked out but they were adjusted in a few days.

I'll see what he says about giving her something, because she is extrememly high strung and I dont want her stressed out all day when she is in the kennel. We live in a one bedroom apt, so another room isnt really an option. Except the bathroom, but I dont think that is such a great idea. Thanks for you suggestions.

Re: Moving and boarding cats for the day
When my parents moved they did the same thing. When dh and I moved, we left them at my MIL's house for a few hours.
Leaving them in boarding is the best thing to do. A lot is going on and they will truly freak out if they are there.
BTW- If you need a great moving company fm me.

Re: Moving and boarding cats for the day
Our two went to "kitty day care" when we moved! I picked them up about 8pm (they were there 12 hours) Vet told us just to have some familiar things for them, they have a blanket each so we put those on the chairs and they wandered around for a while, funnily enough they wouldn't go up the stairs until we did and they were quite nervous, but they settled in fine.
We just found it easier to have them out of the way for the day + they are not outdoor cats and I was scared they might escape!
Good luck with the move!

Re: Moving and boarding cats for the day
Is there a friend or family member that could keep the cats at their place while you're moving? Cats are generally traumatized by any change in scenery...especially where there are other strange animals involved. I know my cat flips out the minute she sees we're putting her in the car!
If you can find someone else to watch them instead of boarding them, it may save them some stress.

Re: Moving and boarding cats for the day
Because of the stress factor, I wouldn't recommend boarding them. I would lock them in the bathroom until the movers leave and then take them with me to the new place. We did this with our cat and it worked out fine. It seems better to me only cuz they aren't taken somewhere and put in a cage for hours. Cats tend to freak out about that stuff.
Good luck and Happy Moving!!!!
