Moving tip

DH's cousin gave me this idea. She is uber-organized! It is time consuming to do - so if you know you are moving months in advance this could work for you.

Make a spreadsheet in Excel and "inventory" your belongings.

Start by room

for instance,

The kitchen is 100 series
dining room 200,
etc.

start by numbering your boxes 101, 201 and so on.

The whole time giving as much detail as you feel you will need in each box.

This way when you get into your new home and you want to unpack, say your coffeemaker, right away, just consult your spreadsheet and see exactly which numbered box it is in.

and if you want to take it further you can make labels for the boxes by a mail merge into a Word label format.

You can tell she put a lot of thought into her move.

Re: Moving tip

I just label them, kitchen, bedroom, basement..yikes..talk about extending the agony..

It is organized but for me to consult a spreadsheet while I'm unpacking sounds like more work overall!

Good for her though..

Re: Moving tip

We did that too- but not on the computer. We wrote down in a notebook what number box, what type of box (ie: Smirnoff, Amazon, etc), and everything we put in there b/c we are very NOT organized. This way when our stuff was in storage for 6 months, if we needed something, we'd consult our list and at least had a idea of where it might be found. Of couse since we were very last minute packers, the last bunch of boxes was a little more vague.

Re: Moving tip

Knowing me, I would pack up the computer & need another copy of the listChat Icon
I have been writing on my boxes which room & specific items in the box. For me it works better then keeping track of a list. But it does indeed sound organized.

Re: Moving tip

My parents did this and it was a good thing...when the moving company lost a few of thier boxes they not only knew it, but knew EXACTLY what was lost and therefor exactly how much to make the moving company reimburse them for.

Re: Moving tip

I just used color coded markers and labled the boxes so no matter if you could read english or not it was easy to specify to the movers which room each box went to.
Kitchen was red
Master bedroom was blue
2nd bedroom was purple
livingroom was green
dining room was orange

Once the movers put the boxes in the rooms it was easy to go through things room by room.

I also labled things with words so the contents were easy to id.

i.e. computer cables, disks
pots, pans, dishes.

Re: Moving tip

That is a really good idea...but, when I moved, I barely had the time to pack...and just labeled the boxes kitchen, pots and pans, glasses, etc. etc.

This is the same method I used and it worked great. I didn't waste time unpacking books, knick-knacks, craft supplies and I knew where the important things were.
