Moving to Charlotte, NC?

Hi my husband and I just got married and we are moving to charlotte NC in 2 weeks. We just can't afford a house here and my husband is transfering with work. I am so happy because we will be able to have the life that we want but it is so hard to leave our family and friends. I see my parents at least once a week and have a close group of friends that I have been friends with since i was 7. If you did move out of state how did you handle saying goodbye to everyone(I feel this will be the hardest part)? and Was it hard to make new friends, how did you meet people?

Re: Moving to Charlotte, NC?

I moved to Charlotte a little over a year ago. I am a SAHM and found it incredibly hard to make friends. I talk to everyone and solicit myself out to anyone who will listen.

I made great friends down here through this site. Thank God for them.

Its really just like dating. You have to put yourself out there. I have no school or work friends here. I joined different meetup clubs online and get out of the house that way...either at parks, malls, or playgroups in someone's home. (Lately, it seems my kid is getting his a$$ kicked by bad kids in these meetups, so I have to find new moms)

If you are going to be working down here, then you should have no problem meeting people.

where in charlotte are you moving?

I am currently in Ballantyne

Re: Moving to Charlotte, NC?

We moved just outside of Charlotte about 4 1/2 months ago. It has been really hard meeting new people. I've made some new friends from work, but none of them are my age and in the same phase of life (I'm 27, married for almost 3 years and planning our first child).

I recently joined meetup.com, they have a "Charlotte Ex-New Yorkers" group. DH and I are going to be meeting them tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes. Hopefully we'll meet some people to hang out with.

Anyway, if you're feeling lonely when you get here, FM me and we'll get together! I'm always up for meeting new people. Chat Icon

Re: Moving to Charlotte, NC?

Thanks for all the helpful advice ladies. We are moving to huntersville. It's about 15 minutes north of charlotte. While we are closing on our house we will be staying short term in south park?, right down the block from the southpark mall. Our realtor is from ballyantine, she is originally from rockville center. I guess with less than a week to go and seeing everyone yesterday at Thanksgiving I am getting cold feet. You guys are right, I will have to put myself out there, like dating.

We're in Indian Trail, which is in Union County. To the southeast of Charlotte. Only about 45 minutes from Huntersville. Chat Icon

I agree re: the GTG. I think we're long overdue, and there are at least 6-8 of us here!

Re: Moving to Charlotte, NC?

how funny! We first rented month to month in South Park(Colony and Sharon)

then we rented in Huntersville(Birkdale)

now we rent in Ballantyne.

Huntersville is by far where we felt most comfortable. Its mini NY up there.

(thanks for the shout out to my baby boy)Chat Icon

Beth, let's meet up soon. Chat Icon

Re: Moving to Charlotte, NC?

We moved over 8 years ago and at that time so many things were happening in our lives we just didn't look back. As sad as we were leaving, we were as equally if not more excited about our new adventure to come. New place, New career, New marriage, New everything. It's harder now that we have the perfect house and children running aorund in it, but we get family visitors often and go home as much as we can. It's not easy traveling with our DD and now 2 to come, but we do it and enjoy it.

NC is not that far for travels and you'll get used to everything. Best of luck.

Re: Moving to Charlotte, NC?

We moved down about 6 months ago-it was tough, but not as tough as it is for some because we were already living about 5 hours away so we didn't get to see everyone all the time anyway. We don't get back quite as often, but with the reduced commute time and the ability to actually buy a home, it's worth it. With our prior commutes we would never be able to see our daughter if we still lived up north.

We had a baby over the summer (our first), moved into our house too, lots of exciting stuff. Our neighborhood is very welcoming, so that helps. However, we still need to get out and meet people. We live just north of Charlotte (Harrisburg, right next to Concord) and both work in Charlotte.
