Re: MSRP

It depends on a lot of things. The time of year, if they are looking to get rid of them to make room for the new models coming in, the demand for that particular model etc.
You can get some ideas on Edmunds of what others have paid, true market value, dealer invoice etc

Shop around A LOT. We got a great deal on a Honda Accord in October. I contacted probably 12 dealerships. I was willing to travel within 90 miles. Once I got a deal, I’d contact another and use that deal to get a better price. The best deal in the end was the dealer 2 miles from our house which was obviously very convenient.

How did you contact each dealer - by email? Through their websites?

i had a hard time getting anyone to give me a quote via email. They all want you to come in
The only time I got a quote via email was when I had already bought my car through one salesguy- then a few months later DH needed a new truck. I emailed that salesrep directly, told him what we wanted and we did the whole deal via email- just went in to sign paperwork and take the truck
But I already had a relationship with him

That makes sense - but going to 12 dealerships up to 90 miles away seems like a lot! But I guess if that's what it takes to get a great deal, it could be worth it

I mean I can't speak for her experience, maybe she was able to get quotes on the phone or email. I just know when i was looking, it was like pulling teeth.
Then I had someone who i thought was a salesperson call me back, give me a quote that was in a "range" for what I wanted and told me to come in. She even called me to confirm I was coming in etc.
I go in, ask for her, and am told that she is just the "internet sales person" and that she doesn't actually sell cars.
So everything she told me meant nothing pretty much and I had to start from scratch with a salesperson
Annoying

Re: MSRP

There is no set $ or %. Buy at the end of the month. Some months, like September when new class year vehicles come out mean that the old class year are discounted, and February because it is a shorter month have more deals. Right now tariffs are causing a 10% spike in the price of used cars. Go on kbb.com, edmunds.com, and cars.com to cross check the prices of vehicles and individual options.

1. Use the on line sales department.
2. If you can, get a price from Costco.
3. Know your finances ahead of time. Get a preapproval from a credit union or your bank.
4. Don't buy the after market stuff they try to sell you.
5. Negotiate the full price, not the monthly payment.
6. Know how long of a term you want to pay. Ideally 3, but no more than 5 years. If you need more than 5 years, you cannot afford that vehicle.
7. Know who has what car in stock before you go. Get the one you want at that dealer. If the dealer has to get the car from another dealer you are going to have to pay extra for that. Go to the dealer that has the car.
8. Test drive in the rain or snow on the exact car you plan on buying.
9. Go buy on a raining night, Christmas eve or non car buying holiday.
10. Know your numbers and come in with a reference folder.

MSRP

As someone who works at a dealership- nobody ever pays MSRP UNLESS the car is limited production or extremely new and in high demand. Most deals go out at invoice or just below invoice depending on the sales objectives and dealership progress.

I know nothing of the 10% price hike that the previous poster is talking about. Our used cars are priced the same as they've always been.

The month end purchase time is true, sometimes. If the store has already met their objective they wont be as quick to take a deeper deal. If they haven't, then they might take a deal they otherwise wouldn't. Used cars dont have anything to do with sales objectives for the month. Dealers are rated on their new car performance.

As for internet sales- those prices are usually very close to what the store owns the car for, so dont expect a deep discount off of those prices.

ETA:
Model year clear outs dont happen all at once. For example, 2 of my models are 2020 and 3 are 2019. Theres some extra rebates on one of the 2019 vehicles, not the other 2. Every manufacturer flips model years at different times.

My husband works at a dealership and all the pre owned cars have an additional $995 dealer fee on top of the list price. Can’t speak about new cars that I’m not sure. It’s always different, you are likely to get a better deal on something that’s been sitting in the lot for a while...

Used car prices rise due to tariffs. It started last year

So, in reading this article the tariff is actually on the price of NEW cars, causing the demand for used cars to go up. Yes, prices on new cars have gone up in the past year. They go up every year. Pricing on used cars has always been based on demand and the condition of the car. The prices of used cars are not directly effected by any tariffs put in place.

"Augusto Amorim, senior manager for Americas vehicle sales forecasts at LMC Automotive in Troy. "I don’t think they’d consider any tariff on the used car at this point.""

"And if a new car is priced higher, its rate of depreciation is now starting at a higher point, said Keller. This will bump up prices on late-model used cars. "

""The used market could be injected with millions of consumers it never had before," Drury said. "It will cause a huge uptick in demand and we will see prices go up across the board for used cars.""

Regardless, like I stated in my previous post, our used cars are priced the same as they always were. Based on demand, condition, and how long it is in inventory for.

Thats usually a prep fee. Ours is $595 I believe. Most times that is waived or reduced based on how the deal is negotiated.
