Multiple kids with same name in class...
If there are 3 or more Marys in your kid's class, would you want your Mary to be referred to as Mary Last name first initial or a nickname. Thanks

Re: Multiple kids with same name in class...
In my class first I ask the children if they have a nickname (last year I had 2 Kaitlyns. 1 was called Kaitlyn, the other we called Katie.)
If no nicknames I call them by first and last name (Kaitlyn Smith and Kaitlyn Jones)
A few years ago I had 2 Emilys and by 1 mom's request we called her daughter Emily Grace and the other just Emily.

Re: Multiple kids with same name in class...
I have a Nicholas.
'Nuff said.
He is Nick K.
We also have a Nick V. and a Nick I. in his same class.
But honestly, at this age (4th grade) they all refer to each other by last names only.

Re: Multiple kids with same name in class...
As a teacher, I always ask the kid.
DS's nickname is more popular than his given name, however, we call him by his given name. When he was in the baby room at daycare, only 3 boys, 2 out of three had his name
DD's name has many similar names associated with it. One is so popular that I had FIVE girls in one of my high school classes with that name... same class... one each row and of course five different spellings . Because of that her given and what we call her is not one of the more popular versions today. But I still was surprised that she has yet to share the name with another classmate.
BTW: I was always the only "Theresa" in my neighborhood and school until my Dad started dating and married a woman who had a daughter with the same first and middle name as me As I was older, I became "Big Theresa" and she was "Little Theresa" and my Dad and brother were "Big M" and "Little M"

Re: Multiple kids with same name in class...
Ironically, DS1 has two Nick's in his class this year! They are Nick M. and Nick D. That is how it is done at DS2's pre-school as well...

Re: Multiple kids with same name in class...
I'd think last initial would work better. I have two Jessica's on my soccer team and while it would be okay to call one Jess and one Jessica, it never really works out that way. Much easier from the adult-in-charge point of view to use the last initials.

This is how it was in DH's classes (I was the only one with my name in my class).
32 years after kindergarten, his childhoold friends still call him Nickname, Last Initial.

Re: Multiple kids with same name in class...
Nicholas here too
We go back first name, last initial. They tried the Nicky and Nicholas thing in kindergarten when it was only two of them but now in first grade, there are 3 of them!!
To this day they still call each other Nicholas N. or Nicholas W (even at playdates!!) lol

Re: Multiple kids with same name in class...
Ironically, I'm going to have to deal with this myself....
In my Cub Scout den, the two new boys each have the name of an existing boy. (And, yes, Nicholas is one of the names that are duplicated.... )
I'm the Asst Coach for DD's soccer team, and out of 9 kids, we have 3 Michaels....

Re: Multiple kids with same name in class...
If there is ever another Lance in his class I'm going to fall down. People usually give me dirty looks when I tell them his name.
There is another Grace in my DD's tot class though. DD is Grace S, or full name.

Re: Multiple kids with same name in class...
I just brought this up with a fellow mom at DS's preschool. She was telling me that last year there were 2 Henry's in the class. One of the Henry's has a twin sister. She even got to calling her twin brother, Henry M!

"Common" names are only common if people in your circles have the same name. Everywhere I go, I see Ryans. In Cub Scouts, soccer, school.... What's really strange, I thought, was that after 8 years, my son David still hasn't come across another David in any of his activities. I fully expected several..... go figure.

Jordan actually isn't that uncommon. Nationally, it's been hovering around 45th most popular name, and I've seen a couple.
Nationally, Peyton is about the same popularity as Jordan, and rising quickly.
The funny thing is, for young kids (5 and younger), Jennifer is much less common than Jordan or Peyton....

Re: Multiple kids with same name in class...
We usually go with first name and last initial.
This year, a fellow 1st grade teacher has two girls with the same name and almost exactly the same last name (e.g. Sara Smithson and Sara Smith). So, she's going with Sara red (who has red hair) and Sara brown (who has brown hair).
The two kids in my class with the same first name are kind of funny - one of them is the name of a popular cookie when you say his first name and last initial! So far, none of the kids have picked up on it (1st grade) ... and I'm hoping they don't for the rest of the year!
