My 2 week-old just spit up his ENTIRE bottle.

I have been BF throughout the night and pumping for bottles throughout the day. I burp him after every ounce (he takes 3), so I don't understand. He just finished his bottle and the ENTIRE thing just came up. He seems ok and is dosing off in my arms right now. Could this be reflux or just a random thing? Do I feed him again since his belly must now be completely empty? Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated! I don't want to call his doctor over this. TIA!

He may have just had to much. If he is sleeping, let him sleep. My advice is, let him drink until he is done THEN burp him. I did what you did after every oz. My mother thought i was nuts. But, i then ( hate to admit, i listened to mom) and waited, he had less spit up. To much jiggling around. I dont think it a ped phone call spit up. You will know when that happens Chat Icon

Re: My 2 week-old just spit up his ENTIRE bottle.

It has happened to me before.
Could be he drank too fast.
My ped said their little stomachs are only the size of their little fists. So anything excess will come back up.
What flow nipple was on there?
If it's too fast that will cause it as well.

If it was reflux he'd be crying and arching his back, fighting the bottle.

This to me sounds like he just guzzled too fast.
As long as he seems quiet and fine you won't need to call.

Thank you!! My mom thinks I'm nuts, too lol. He's been gassy so my ped told me to burp him frequently. I'm going to let him just finish at the next feeding. Thanks again!! Chat Icon

Re: My 2 week-old just spit up his ENTIRE bottle.

My ped always said that it might seem like it is a lot more..he told me to take some water or milk and put it on a tbsp and dump it on your kitchen counter...it seems like A LOT more than when it is in the little tbsp spoon! If he is sleeping and content let him be he will awake when he is hungry! I aggree with PP...try to burp less see if that helps...all the moving is a lot of jiggling around in their stomachs!

try maybe a little less:

My EBF babies took 2 oz of milk ever 2 hrs for their first month and went up about a half oz ever month until it plateaued at 5.5 oz and never went up from there the first whole year!

That might also help with the spit up .. bec their stomach is only the size of a golf ball at about 2 weeks!

Yeah that could be it... he must have just drank it too fast. I'm using the Dr. Brown's NB nipples. He's usually fine with them. This is prob just a fluke thing,

THANK YOU!! I feel like such a paranoid 1st-time mom. Chat Icon

Good point! It splashed down my back and couch so it sure felt like the entire bottle! lol

I started with 1.5 oz when we got home from the hospital and he always wanted more so I up'd it until he seemed content. He doesn't always polish off the full 3 oz but did today. He's usually good with stopping when full. He must have been hungry today!

Thank you!! Chat Icon

That happened to me once when DD was a week old. It went everywhere Chat Icon and it was right before her newborn pics! She was totally fine, it was a fluke thing, and never happened again Chat Icon

Maybe it was just too much. See what happens with the next bottle. MY DD ALWAYS spit up....she had nothing wrong with her and pediatrician said she is what the dr's call "a happy spitter" Chat Icon

3 oz sounds like alot. Their bellies are still so little at 2weeks. Try 2 oz and see what happens maybe

Trust me... It wasn't the entire bottle.

Re: My 2 week-old just spit up his ENTIRE bottle.

We refer to this as the fountain. My niece used to do this every so often when I was her nanny. She was bf but I would bottle feed her when my sister was a work. Whenever it would happen both of us would be covered in milk and should would look like she couldn't care less. It was usually if she drank too much too fast. Dd did it a couple times after drinking from the breast but it was always on the side that had a forceful letdown,

Definitely a fluke thing, DD would do this - usually after we were both dressed to go somewhere Chat Icon

Not necessarily about the reflux. DD is what they call a 'happy spitter' she has reflux and spits up A LOT, but is in no pain nor does/did she arch her back.

I agree he could have just drank too fast. DS did that once when I gave him a cold bottle. Also want to add it looks like a lot more coming out then it is. If you spill out 1/2 oz or oz of water on your counter and see what it looks like it looks like so much more than it really is. Personally I wouldn't call unless it becomes a habit.

I'm thinking it's a fluke, try giving him the bottle without stopping and while it may have seemed he spit up the whole thing, it's usually not Chat Icon
