My 4 year old Chiweenie (dauchsound/ chihuahua ) mix is regressing, training help please! LONG SORRY

My 4 year old mix has been acting out the past month. Here is some background , I've had her since she was a puppy and I lived with my parents, I am now married and we live on our own. She was fine the first three months same habits and no accidents but now.... Within one week she both pooped and threw up on my bed.

She gets a bone every night (mini ringo dingo) and when she was eating it on my bed ( I was in the den) she pooped all over my bed (solid Chat Icon sorry for the description) Usually she would ask to go out(bark) or jump off the bed and run in circles to ask to go out... no no that didn't happen she pooped on the bed.

Part of the cause I think was she had different dog food that week because we ran out and DH had to just pick some up from CVS so it wasn't her usual. But that wouldn't make her poop on the bed.... Would it? Usually she eats Royal Canine small breed weight loss and she had eaten Beneful regular food.

And this morning she threw up Bile on my bed, I'm pretty sure its because we were at my parents and she ate a few french fries and food my nephew threw off his highchair. So that one I kind of excused.

Could she be acting out because she feels she has more freedom with my husband around her all the time now? He is the soft one, like the night she pooped on the bed and I banished her to the bathroom for the night, but when he woke up in the middle of the night he let her back in the bed....Chat Icon

I bought a cage today and I am going back to step 1. Question is, If I plan on caging her when I leave for work, I cant put her in there as punishment can I ? Isn't that like sending a child to their room when they are bad? HELP me please! How do I punish her?

She definitely could have gotten sick from the food.
I would not punish her.
Especially with her throwing up, something obviously isn't sitting right.
When you introduce a new food you're supposed to do it gradually so you have less of a chance of making your dog sick.
I understand this was not an option for you this time.
I would give her the benefit of the doubt and hope the poo was because the food made her feel funny and she didn't realize she was going to do her business on your bed.
When she's back on her food for a week, I'd wait to see if it happens again before I crated her.
I hope it's the food and you find no more crap in your bed.Chat Icon
Good Luck!

That is what I was thinking! How do you feel on crating her when we leave for the day, instead of gating her in the bathroom?

I'm a bad judge because I never crated.
When Bruno was a baby he was gated in the kitchen.
When Vito was a baby he was gated in a bedroom.
They both had constant access to their pads, food and water.

I would choose where there's the most comfort and warmth.
I'm pretty sure my dogs just sleep when we're gone so they just want a comfy place.

Would you be putting water in the crate?
If she's feeling ill she needs it.
If there's no room in the crate I would choose the bathroom so you could put water down.

Yes I usually am the same way with crating, I'm just at a loss, I think I'll give her a week or so to feel better and see if her behavior improves, and I always leave her food and water Chat Icon thanks for the help

just an FYI - there are special crates for dachsaunds that make turning around easier for them. My aunt has one and it is much more comfortable for her dog.

From what you're describing, it sounds like she's having valid health issues because her food was suddenly changed and she was fed things that didn't agree with her. Certainly nothing she should be blamed or punished for, considering it was no fault of her own.

I don't see any reason you should change a routine that's working for her at all. I know you were in a situation but if you change her food without weaning her on to something new, you can expect problems. When we have an upset stomach here, we remove anything that isn't regular food, mix in some plain cooked white rice, and increase water because they can become dehydrated.

I'd start with treating a sick dog and care for her medical needs, that's all.
