My 9/5/08 scheduled c-section
On 8/28/08, a growth sono I had showed that DS was measuring approximately 8 lbs. 12 oz. at only 38.5 weeks. Although my doctor said it could, of course, go a pound either way, both she and the other doctor in the practice understood my concern that I would go into labor for hours and not be able to push him out – and would end up with a c-section anyway.
After a bit of being bounced around my c-section was finally scheduled for 8am on 9/5/08. I checked into the hospital at 6am and they put my in a recovery room in L&D so I could change and they could start my IV. Not two minutes into our stay DH and I heard a baby being born across the hallway – holy crap! All we could do is stare at each other in amazement as the mom giving birth yelled “pull it out!”
The nurse assigned to me at South Nassau was absolutely amazing – she talked a LOT which kept my mind off of this major surgery and anesthesia, and that was really helpful as I’d never experienced anything stronger than novacaine for a cavity fill. The anesthesiologist was great too, really kind and caring and reassured me that ever feeling I experience was totally normal.
They gave me the spinal and then let DH in. Although the doctor said it would take several minutes before DS was out it felt like only a few seconds passed before I heard him crying! The nurse brought him to the side of the sheet so I could see him and all I could think was “he is HUGE!” DH goes to the bassinet to take pics and the next thing I hear is “7 lbs 10 oz.” um WHAT??
The doctor later told me that he does have a large head, so that likely threw off the growth sono measurements – and I could have had trouble pushing him out because of that issue alone, so I am totally comfortable with my decision. So far, I don’t regret not having gone thru labor one bit.
As the doctors closed me up (they used steri-strips instead of stables which I am SO happy about) DH got to hold DS the whole time. Although I could see them both I was shaking so badly from the spinal that I couldn’t really enjoy it and all I could think was “I can’t wait to be left alone.”
I was wheeled into recovery and got to hold DS for a few minutes but I didn’t really want too – I was afraid I would drop him I was shaking so badly!!
After they brought DS to the nursery they let my parents and my ILs into the recovery room with me for a while which was really nice, and then I sent them all to get lunch so I could rest. I was in my room by 11:30am and I think they brought DS into my room around 1pm.
The best part of my recovery was that they took the catheter out that night and let me move around on my own as soon as I thought I could – the nurses and doctors at South Nassau really let you guide them through your own recovery and since I was so motivated to move and start feeling better I really think that helped. The nurses and lactation consultants there were great too, and although DS and I continue to have issues with latching, he is gaining weight so I know I am doing something right
Without further ado, let me introduce the love of my life:

Congrats!!! He is so adorable.
I had the shakes too. When they wheeled me into recovery and DH asked if I wanted to hold Alex I was shaking so bad I thought I would drop him. Of the entire experience the shakes is what scared me the most.
