My appt with Dr Scher- VERY long
First off, I want to thank Michele (redstar) for convincing me to go. My RE had recommended a while ago that I see him, but I went to the hematologist instead.
Dr Scher is the first Dr in a LONG time to really give me hope. He was so positive and supportive. Even my DH, who is a total pessimist, left with a smile on his face.
We went over my history, and all the testing that I had previously done. He took 8 vials of blood from DH, and 9 from me (I had given 8 at Cornell that morning too!).
He basically explained that your body has so many antibodies, and if some of these antibodies don't mesh correctly (with DH's or with each other), nothing will stick. He feels that this is our problem, and its all treatable. Made a lot of sense to us, especially since my concern has always been that with all the embryos I have put back (25? I lost count), the only one that had ever stuck was OUTSIDE my uterus. No one else ever seemed to be concerned about that, but Dr Scher immediately picked that up and agreed that something wasn't right.
So, he basically told me that he would recommend IVIg (Intra Venous Immune Globulin) before ER, and again if I get a BFP. This is to boost my immune system. This has been a big worry for me, one of the reasons I never went to see him. It's basically a transfusion of blood product, and it is NOT FDA approved. He assured me that the blood is washed and it is totally safe. I do have a few friends that have done it, so I think I am ok with it. I go back in a few weeks when all our test results come back, and he will fine tune treatment in accordance with our results.
Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know how happy I am that we went to see him, and if anyone is interested in going, it is totally worth it!!!!!

I was originally going to cycle, well, now, but now I am going to wait until all my tests are back so between my cycle and Cornell's schedule I'm probably looking at April.

Re: My appt with Dr Scher- VERY long
Thanks girls...
Just so there is no mixup, the Dr I saw is Dr Jonathan Scher OB/GYN. He specializes in recurrent miscarriages and immune issues. I will still be cycling with Cornell.
There is a Dr Geoffrey Sher, and RE who is head of SIRM (Sher Institute of Reproductive Medicine).
It gets confusing.

Re: My appt with Dr Scher- VERY long
As you know Lisa, I am so happy you went to see Dr. Scher. As I said in my forum mails to you, he is one of the most compassionate people I have ever met. After all my consults, my dh and I just look at each other, and say "wow"... The amount of knowledge this doctor has and is willing to share just goes beyond expectations. Every single person in that office from the nurses to the billing manager, are wonderful.
I highly recommend anyone who has had to deal with ivf failure, miscarriage, or any immune issue...to see Dr. Scher. It is also very important to have the immune testing done....because, that can cause lack of implantation.
Just like Lisa said, he is a ob/gyn so he does not perform IVF...he just works in conjunction with your RE. He highly recommends working with Dr. Davis from Cornell.
