My baby got her AF!!!!!!!!

How long does this usually last?

We thought we would be able to get her fixed before she got her first af, but i guess not.

She is going the first week in may!

Re: My baby got her AF!!!!!!!!

I know for yorkies, it lasts 20-30 days (at least this was the case for my MILs yorkie), but they also only get their AF every 3 months or so.

Re: My baby got her AF!!!!!!!!

You may have to postpone her visit now. My vet told me that you have to wait about 2-3 months AFTER they have their per. to get them spayed.

I would contact your vet.

This is absolutely right. Please call your vet & ask exactly what signs you need to look for to know when the cycle is done, and then how long after that until you can have her surgery.

You will need to reschedule the appt. Dogs cannot get fixed right after they have a period, or during even. Too much blood flow to the ovaries, uterus, and they risk bleeding out during surgery.

My girl dog too went into heat earlier than we expected, so we had to wait it out. I waited about 2 mths AFTER her bleeding stopped (which btw, her bleeding lasted one MONTH on and off and she is little, only 11 lbs).

She bled so much I had to put a doggie diaper (from Petco) and a panty liner (one or two a day). She was miserable, crabby, her privates and nipples were so swollen. I felt terrible for her.

You really should just reschedule the appt for about 2.5 mths from now to be safe. I did a lot of research on it and my vet even agreed.

ETA - Also make sure you keep an eye on her constantly. She can easily get pg, and I have read that male dogs will try to get to a girl dog in heat anyway they can. So close eye on her when she is out or has the ability to get out. Even when I walked my girl dog, male dogs would want to come sniff her privates (they still do, a year later, sniff her a lot, poor girl, she hates it).

Go for it, asap. My dog, as small as yours, went into heat at around 8mths and it was not good. Very messy, very uncomfortable for her. I wished I did it sooner.

Oh no, that stinks!!

Why did you wait so long to get her fixed? Is it different with females? I've only had male dogs.

For me, the reasons I waited to get my girl dog fixed b/c she was having incontience problems, bladder control problems and I had done a lot of research that said that a girl dog sometimes needs the hormones to fully mature her bladder. So I was ambivalent about that, b/c she had such a hard time holding her bladder even at 8 mths, for even 3-4 hrs. I knew it was not my training, as she would go to back door but just not be able to hold it. If she could make it outside, she ran like He LL to get out there and squatted so fast. She also had a lot of bladder infections, issues, so I really wasn't sure what to do, but was so worried she needed her body to mature more before getting the surgery, for the bladder to become strong.

Now I don't know if it was coincidence, but the month she had her AF, she all of a sudden could hold it for 6 hrs, iinstead of 3-4. I don't know if it was the diaper I had on her (she was miserable, and didn't want to run and play, which was always when she had the uncontrollable accidents). Or if it truly was the hormones. But that was why I waited and then I did regret it b/c I worry about her even having a slight increased risk of breast cancer from that one heat.

Oh well, I tried to make the right choice, and I can't hold myself accountable. I am very thankful that my girl's bladder did get better, now she can hold it forever, we have to try to get her to go repeatedly sometimes. Her bladder situation was so bad, I was letting her out 12 times a day as a pup, then even as a 6 mth old, she had to urinate about 6-7 times a day, and kept having many accidents. I had taken her to the vet and she had so many tests that I knew I had to give her bladder the best chance at becoming strong.

Yes, it's true.

Girl doggies are more prone to bladder infections from the shorter urethra, as opposed to males. My male dog was trained by 4 mths, could hold it forever, it's amazing (we don't let him hold it longer than 8 hrs though, I don't think it's healthy).

My poor girl, despite being smarter than my boy, just could not hold it. Poor baby would drip pee pee when she would get excited, get scared, etc. She just had very weak bladder muscles and boy was it very frustrating training her for so long. But it was well worth it, my dogs never ever have accidents in my house or even family's houses. They really have it down pat.

Interesting! I never knew this, though it makes complete sense.

Your little girl is becoming a "lady" dog. LOL

I kept telling my girl she was now a lady dog, not a girl doggie.

And my vet cracked me up, told me my girl would be able to wear a BIKINI by the summer. I still say that, it was so cute and funny!
