My baby is sick. 1st time mom. Advice/tips? and tiny vent plus some tears.
My 4 month old DS is sick. 1st time. Not only did he get 2 vaccines + rotovirus on Saturday but now this. He was down all day yesterday and sneezing and then last night he was awake most of the night. He sounds congested. I think it's in his chest He had trouble drinking his bottle and would suddenly sit up sometimes like he was maybe catching his breath or something.
What can I do to make him feel better? And get better soon? He doesn't have a fever.
And now my vent. I have spent the last 4 months doing everything I could to prevent my little guy from getting sick. I wear a scarf and if anyone near me even remotely coughs, my face is down in the scarf so I don't breathe in their germs. I stay away from crowded places as much as I can, wash my hands, keep him away from too many people, etc. and who gets him sick? My MOM who watches him! I know it's not her fault but I am so peeved. And i'm more upset that I'm at this stupid job instead of hime taking care of my angel It's so hard to sit here knowing he's sick. I haven't left bc I want to stay home with him tomorrow if he needs me. It's so hard to be a working mom.

I could have written this myself! DD is 4.5 months and has her first cold too. I have kept her so shelter lol since she was born & finally took her out to visit some friends last weekend and wham- sick. We took her to the DR on Friday and he said as long as the mucus/snot stays clear, which is is, she is fine. She has a wet cough, runny nose, sneezing and not eating 100% (actually about 10 less oz. per day). Sounds similar to your little guy. The DR checked her ears, throat, chest and said she was clear- this is just a cold and might linger for a bit. Some tips to help- elevate mattress, cool mist humidifier, saline/bulb, bring in bathroom with steam.... and just wait it out! We're on day 3 and although her cough is still very bad, she ate a bit better and slept a little better last night too. Hope your little guy feels better soon!

aww, your little man will feel better soon.
A couple of tips: -use a humidifier. It will help HUGELY with the congestion during the night -give him a bath. I'm a firm believer in a nice warm bath as a great way to clean everything out. -lysol all his stuff.
Dont' worry, its probably just a cold. Babies are pretty strong.

I'm sorry he's sick. I know you're upset by it, but it's bound to happen. You can't shelter them forever. You just do your best. Sometimes it's better to get sick (not that you want to hear this), but it builds up their immune system. Exactly what you're doing sounds good. Children's tylenol for any fever or aches/pains. If he's not eating get pedialyte so he stays hydrated, cool mist humidifier, asparator, nasal spray, we use the Vick's plug-ins, keep him elevated (I put some wash clothes on one side of the crib where his head is), taking breathing breaks when feeding and keep kim up when you can. I once put Mason to sleep in the bouncy when he was sick b/c he couldn't breathe when I layed him down. Also bathed him and kept wiping him down. Maybe it's my OCD, but I feel clean keeps the germs away. LOL Hope he feels better!

Re: My baby is sick. 1st time mom. Advice/tips? and tiny vent plus some tears.
I was sick last week (still getting over it) and Luce developed some stuff in his nose.
I used the humidifier, sucked those snots out of his nose like it was my job, rinsed it out with saline drops and breast fed him more than bottle so he could get the immunity from my body fighting the cold and put it to good use.
I also used the Johnson's vapor bath in his bath on Saturday. I was able to get out so much of the mucous in his nose after.
even though it sucks and we HATE it...it's good for them to be exposed to germs. it's good for their immunity.
don't be too hard on your mom. I was so upset at the thought that *I* made my boy sick...I am sure she feels badly.
and yeah, it REALLY sucks to be at work when they are sick.
thursday and friday were the worst days for him (and ME) but I had a project due and I just couldn't call out.
putting him down while he was so uncomfy and not understanding why he felt so bad was SOOOO DIFFICULT. It really hurts the heart and I think, goes against nature
it's so difficult when you have a large responsibility to something outside of your home in times like that.

My little guy also has his first cold. He woke up screaming at 4AM b/c he couldn't breathe, and I let him cry for a minute thinking he just wanted his binky (he can put it in himself), but he was freaking out b/c he couldn't breathe. I picked him up and it was like he was s relieved I was there, and let his whole body go limp and relax. I took him into bed w/ us where he slept a little better.
Does anyone else's DC HATE the nasal aspirator (and saline drops)? DS is too quick and grabs it out of my hands, and if I try to swaddle him to do it he will turn his head back and forth to avoid it.

It is almost impossible to prevent them from getting sick. Getting sick is how they build up their immune systems.
It is heartbreaking to watch how uncomfortable they are but give him a few days and he will feel better

most times it was a battle royale!!! he would move his had, swat at it..the whole 9.
it actually was easier when I sat him up. if he was otherwise engaged, he would relax and I'd surprise him.
however, I found that if I did it while he was crying, I'd suck out more snot.
it sucked though. I was afraid he would hate me.

YES! I can't go anywhere near his face. Not even to just wipe a boogy with a soft wipe Sometimes I'll make a game of it... sing to him or do it to him on his cheek or belly to show it won't hurt. Sometimes he'll stop (for a moment) and let me do it and other times he freaks out and waves his arms all around and turns his head fast

Get the battery operated nasal aspirator - it's FABULOUS and in literally 2 seconds everything is sucked out .......No more fighting w/ that stupid little bulb thing that doesn't suck out anything !!
Use the humidifier - it helps SO much when my son is sick
And if he's really badly congested that you can hear/feel it in his chest, I'd take him to the Dr.

Aw everybody's little ones seem to be getting their first colds. My DS had his first cold last week too. I ran the humidifier on high, gave him some tylenol and rubbed the baby vicks on him. The vicks seemed to help the congestion.
