My baby story (sorry long) (edited to add pictures)
Matteo was born December 4, 2007 at 3:53 PM. He weighed 7 pounds 5 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. He wasn't due until December 26.
I had posted a message on here about these pains that I was having that wouldn't go away. My doctor appt. was on Tuesday so I figured I would ask then. Tuesday morning came and the pain was really bad so I called and had my appointment time changed to an earlier appt. I was barely able to drive there, but I made it. My blood pressure was high, I now had protein in my urine (the week before I had complained about the pains in my abdomen but they said that he was just pressing against something). The doctor told me that I had to go to the hospital for some additional blood work and that they would be admitting me for observation. He said there would be a chance that I would have to deliver the baby that afternoon. My DH had just gotten to the laundramat when I called. I didn't want him to leave the clothes there and the attendant was giving him a hard time about finishing them for us (they have drop off service so I'm not sure what the problem was). Basically my DH did what he had to and convinced them that the clothes better be here when he got back.
So my DH picks me up to take me to the hospital. I was pretty calm. The doctor mentioned that I may be preeclamptic. I had the blood work done, but it was more than what the doctor originally thought. My blood pressure was still high, my liver function enzymes were way off, and my platelet count was very low. They told me I would be having the baby that day. I was also running a fever. Since I was not dialated, they said I couldn't try to deliver naturally. With my platelets dropping there wasn't enough time. And since I was running a fever they wouldn't let me be awake for the c section. They didn't want to go anywhere near my spine if I had any sort of infection. It turns out I had something called HELLP Syndrome. After the surgery I had to have two platelet transfusions. I had to be on magnesium sulfate for 24 hours (to prevent seizures which is also a possiblitity with HELLP). It made me feel so drugged that anytime I held my son, I fell asleep. I couldn't keep my eyes open.
I was so sad that I couldn't see my DH's face when he saw his son for the first time. But both myself and the baby were fine. The baby (thankfully) was never in distress throughout everything. And both me and my DH were thankful that we didn't know how serious my condition was until afterwards.
It seemed like they would never let us leave the hospital, but after six days they finally let me go home.
Matteo is such a good baby and I am so thankful that he is healthy!!!! I couldn't ask for a better Christmas present.
