My Birth Story ... (better late than never)

As many of you know I was due April 24th and kept working and working ... until I would eventually go into labor - I work at the hospital where I was delivering.

I worked 4 days past my due date, then it was the weekend. My parents were going to the Poconos, coming up through our neck of the woods (the Hudson Valley) for dinner, wishfully thinking I'd go into labor while they were here. On our way to dinner to meet them, my sister and her BF, DH and I hit a deer - damaged the front end of my car pretty bad. We were not hurt, just shaken up. Went to dinner ... no signs of labor.

Saturday DH and I went shopping to a few stores including BRU to pick up a few things. On our way walking through the parking lot, I hand DH my BRU bag and out of nowhere I fell landing on my hands, knees, AND overdue belly! I was totally not hurt, but once again very shaken up and concerned about the baby. I continued to feel the baby move throughout the day and evening and was reassured that everything was ok (I have plenty of cushoning around the baby I am sure!)

Late Satuday and Sunday I started getting random cramping. I was told that you will know the real thing when they start, and I was still questioning these - so consider it nothing! My parents decide to swing back in our direction "on their way home to LI" once again JUST INCASE I go into labor. We have dinner at my house, 9pm rolls around they hesitantly decide to go home and wait for the call.

HERE IT IS! 1am Monday morning waking me out of my sleep a pretty bad cramping (I never had one wake me up before) ... back to sleep ... WHAM, another one ... I look at the clock 5 minutes have passed ... this continues every 5 minutes ...

(TMI Warning) 2am - I wake up to use the bathroom and I notice I am losing my mucous plug. Now I get excited, I wake up DH and let him know - we weren't sure what to do since they were already 5 min apart, but I was convinced that we should try to stay at home as long as we can, so we continued to sleep (well, every 5 minutes for me anyway).

Fast forward - 8:30 am Monday morning we head to the hospital, arriving just in time with my 9 am work crowd - bumping into everyone wishing us good luck and excited for us. We head up to L&D and I get checked out they hook me up to a monitor for about an hour and then an internal ... 80 - 90% effaced, and zero dilation, contractions measuring about 25 on the little graph that goes to 100 Chat Icon!!! They sent me home and said come back when they are STRONGER and 2-3 minutes apart. Totally disappointed and now scared for the strengh of the pain to come, DH and I head home, my parents already almost back up to our area since they got our 6 am call that this was it. We call to tell them we have a long way to go still.

My parents stayed, DH went to work for a little while to get some last minute things done knowing that he would be out for a while very soon when baby arrives. All day, every 5 minutes, we watch the clock, coach me through breathing and getting through them ... they take turns with me as lunch and dinner rolls around. Scraps of paper are everywhere with times and durations jotted on them. Consistantly 5 minutes apart and definitely getting stronger!!

By 9:30 pm I call the hospital in tears asking them If I can please come back to get checked out even though they are 5 min apart still. They said to come in. Relieved, we head in - check in through the E.D. around 10 pm. I can't hold back the tears, I am in so much pain. Back on the monitor now measuring around 32 on the little contraction scale, and an internal determines I am fully effaced and only 1 cm dialated!!! I was completely scared at this point of the pain to come to get me to 10 cm. They were ready to send me home AGAIN saying I still have a LONG way to go, but I put my foot down and said, "Unless you can give me some kind of drug to let me sleep through a few of these contractions, I can't leave ... I have been up for almost 24 hours going through this and I am exhausted."

The nurses call my doctor and he agrees to admit me and give me some drugs that will let me sleep a bit. We get admitted at 1 am. From this point on, life was good! I was able to sleep from 1am until about 4 am, at which time I was about 4 cm dilated. We decieded to go for the epidural at this point and I progressed to 10 cm by 7 am! Chat Icon Of course at this time the doctors and nurses all switched shifts and I was sad to see them leave as they helped me this far.

I thought it was happening at this point because they starting getting the bassinet ready (that got me so excited!), but they decided to let me "labor down" which meant letting the baby progress as much on his or her own leaving me to have an easier time pushing if possible.

Life is good, I can't feel much. I did feel a few contractions that were dulled from meds, but I knew they were stronger than I wanted to feel, so they brought on more meds. Chat Icon

At around 9:30 am they ask me to do a test push ... well baby was crowning when I did, no one could believe it, including myself and DH. So the doc quicly got geared up in all the apparel - they had to watch the computer and tell me when to push since I was feeling absolutely nothing. In two sets of pushes HE was finally here! I also have a Hospital Story too ... but I got tired of typing ... Chat Icon

Everything is ok, but Carter was in the NICU for about 24 hours for a slow resting heart rate, but we have been following up with a cardiologist, and all is clear now - thank God Chat Icon
