My birth story-Mason Giovanni 1/27/11
The day I had my DS was truly the most AMAZING day of mine and DH's life. It was also quite a whilrwind! Here's my story:
In December at around 30 weeks I was diagnosed with a partial placenta previa. I was put on pelvic rest and really had to take it easy. We also from then on had to continuously monitor the baby and to see if the placenta moved.
The last sonogram I had done was at 35 weeks, and the baby was SO big and the placenta hadn't moved enough to be considered for a vaginal birth. My OB was concerned about the health of the baby, and immediately pulled me out of work to go on bedrest starting at 36 weeks. My OB scheduled my C-section to be on Friday 1/28 (at 37w 4d). Because of the high risk of bleeding from the previa, we had to deliver DS early.
On 1/27, DH and I went to NS Manhasset hospital for pre-surgical testing and admission, and also I had to have an amnio done (my OB was doing it) to confirm that DS's lungs were mature for the outside world. That morning waking up I felt like I had period cramps, but they were so mild I didn't think anything of it. After the amnio was done, they had me get hooked up to the fetal monitor to do a stress test.....well the nurse comes in to look at the paper and her eyes looked like they were gonna pop out of her head.........she asked how I felt, I said "fine but a little crampy" and she was like 'YOU'RE HAVING CONTRACTIONS 2 MINUTES APART"  They continued to monitor me for an hour and nothing was easing up. My OB came to see me and immediately sent us into Labor and Delivery to wait and see if the contractions would stop. DH and I were hysterical laughing...There we were, in labor, the day before we were supposed to have the baby (thankfully I was smart enough to put my hospital bag in the car, so we had it!) . Fast forward to 3 hours later, I'm still hooked up to everything in L&D, cracking up..we finally got the amnio results at 5pm, everything was great-so my OB came in and said "Jen, you're having this baby TONIGHT"  DH and I were thrilled.
At 6:30 they brought me down to the O.R. Because of the placenta previa I had to deliver in an OR in the event of severe bleeding. Well, let me tell you-everyone in the OR was so excited that a baby was being delivered! As I was waiting to be wheeled in everyone was cheering us on. It was such an exciting moment. Once I got into the operating room, they prepped me for surgery..not gonna lie, that numbing stuff they put in your back before the epidural was SO painful...but OMG seconds later I couldn't feel a thing. The surgery was pretty fast, it was strange just laying there knowing I was totally cut open and not feeling anything. After 20 minutes, we heard "The Head's Out" and then "Shoulders Out", and then we heard our little baby crying. It was the most magical moment of our lives. They showed him to us really quick, before they cleaned him off, and DH and I were just amazed. Once he was brought to us a few minutes later we were just madly insanely in love with our son, it is indescribeable what we feel for him.
Mason Giovanni was 7 pounds, 1 ounce, 19 inches long..
Recovery wasn't so bad...it just took forever for my epi to wear off, so I couldn't move my legs for HOURS after surgery. Besides that though, the pain was really manageable and I was up walking the morning after surgery. In the days and weeks since my C-section, I will say that I've felt good and it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be.
The nurses at NSUH Manhasset were phenomenal, I love that hospital and really had a wonderful experience there. When we have baby #2 we'll absolutely be delivering there again.
