My brother is a camera man for CNN and is stationed in NO

We were talking this evening and I was relaying him the reports that are being played up here and he was so upset. He was also at the tsunami in the aftermath and in many ways feels that NO is so much worse then that. There are way more surviors and just popoluation in general then there was after the tusnami hit. The waters receeded after the storm hit. In NO they are faced with the other levees breaking and causing more flooding. The water has no where to go.

Transportation in many areas is not workable at this time. Amphibean vechicles were stuck today and need to be towed out of the muck. The supplies are there it is just difficult to get it where it needs to go.

The Coast Guard is working 24 hrs a day to rescue people from their roof tops who refused to leave. On one shot, a man said he wasn't ready to leave his house yet, and the Coast Guard said,it is now or never, there is no gurantee that we will make it back this way and the man said "Okay." It took the Coast Guard 4 hours to remove a 400 lbs woman from the 3rd floor of her home. She didn't want to leave either. This is no easy job.

When food was first air-lifted in and dropped, there wasn't enough for everyone. 45,000 people is a lot of people to feed. Men who got to the food first didn't share with the women and children. (I have a problem with that)

The heat is exhausting. I don't know if you have ever been to NO in the summer, I have and it is no joke. Heat, Humidity, & bugs add to the crowd mentality. People are hot, hungry, exhausted, but should have left sooner.

My Dh's family is from NO. 36 of them left on Friday when the warning took place. They barely survived Huricane Betsy in 69 and Anddrew in 92. They packed what they could and took the elderly couple who lived next door with them and they headed north. Thankfully, they are all safe but their homes are gone. They are heading to NYC slowly. Everything is a bit hazy for them right now. They are glad that they left when they did. They have an opportunity to start over and rebuild their lives here in the tri-state area. We are glad to have them closer.

Last Saturday as I sat in my Vegas hotel room, I watched the people of New Orleans sit on the porch and talk about how they will wait out the storm. Very few people took the warnings seriously. Could there have been a better outcome had more people left NO?

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon for your brother. I hope he is safe. I've read that the conditions are terrible and people are turning to violence. I think people should ave left, but how much were they really warned? i don't think anyone thought this could happen. I probably woudln't have left my home either. All we can really do is pray. It must seem like the end of the world to these people Chat Icon
