My bunny died and now my cat is obviously upset...
We got our cat when we already had our rabbit so they were sort of buddies. I let them out together and they would interact and our cat (Duke) would lay on top of our Rabbits cage and hang out wit him. The rabbit was in our finished basement and Dukes litter box is down there as well.
The night we had to put the rabbit to sleep, DH cleaned the cage and took it out of the house. The next day we noticed that the cat had urinated several times in our DSs blow up ball pit. He has NEVER EVER done anything like this. He is 2.5 yrs old.
We realized that the cat wouldnt go down into the basement. We got him to go half way down, but that is it. So obviously he needed to find a place to go to the bathroom other than his litter box. We ended up carrying him down and putting him in his box and he went. After that we had no issues. Now 8 days later he did it again in the ball pit (DH sanitized with bleach).
We threw out the ball pit but are worried he is going to find another place to go. I feel bad for him because he is obviously upset.
Anyone have any experience with this? Im going to take him to the vet next week (he needs a check up anyway)
Thanks

Re: My bunny died and now my cat is obviously upset...
My cat was urinating outside of her litter box. There is some kind of condition caused by stress that mimics a UTI and cats will urinate in unusual places. I had just adopted her and she was definitely stressed from it all. We did put her on an antibiotic and all was in well in short time. No more accidents.
I am sorry your little guy is stressed with the absence of his buddy and I hope he returns to his regular habits soon!
Sorry for your loss

Like the above poster suggested, try the antibiotics b/c it might be a UTI.
But I would also try, if you can, relocating the litter box. He seems a bit traumatized by the loss of his bunny friend and maybe if you move the box upstairs away from that area that reminds him of the bunny -- like an upstairs bathroom, a neutral spot, I think you'll notice a difference.
Poor cat

so sorry about your bun, i lost mine a few years ago and still miss him. i agree about the care though, very intense to do it correctly. my baby just died suddenly, after he had stabilized from a bout with stasis.
no advice about the cat but hugs!!!!!!
