my cat has IBD
I've posted here several times about my cat pooping outside the litter box...well, we finally have a diagnosis, kinda.
Our vet thinks it's IBD. He suggested that we just treat her this way without running all the tests (sono, biopsy, etc). He gave her a cotrisone and B12 shot and prescription food. She got the shots and the new food all last night. This morning, she had diarrhea outside the litter box.
Anyone have an idea about how long the shots and new food should "take effect"?
Also, she's been pooping outside the litter box since saturday. Assuming that it's because of her IBD and she cant control it, once she's feeling better, will she "forget" how to use the litter box?? I'm concerned that she'll forget, but i would hope that it's instinctual...
Anyone have any experience with controlling IBD in cats?
TIA

Re: my cat has IBD
My kitty also has it but he vomits, it's not a poop issue. They said his lining gets inflamed. We crush up a steroid pill for him once every 4 to 7 days and put it in his wet food. If we forget to give it to him for 2 weeks thinking he's fine and he vomits, he is usually fine the same day he gets his steroid. We also stopped giving him dry food because the wet food seems easier to digest for him. It's overwhelming at first but it's not that big of a deal once it's under control! Hope he feels better soon!
As far as the litter is concerned my other cat, his brother, has been urinating right outside the litter box on wee wee pads, even though the litter box is clean. We bought two new litter boxes and a new litter. It's brown, made out of cedar or something. It's more natural, not dusty and very soft and sand like for the cats. So far so good - so you may want to try that! It's at Pet Smart in a blue bag.

I don't know anything about IBD in cats, but I just wanted to say that I hope your cat feels better soon!

My cat hasn't been diagnosed with IBD but we have been on an 8 month journey with him which started with him not pooping or peeing in the litter box.
We have now changed up his food and have him on a prescription laxative as it was determined that he was constipated.
We had the exact same worry as you about forgetting to use the box or that pooping in the house became a 'habit' and the norm for him.
What we did was try to retrain him as if he were a kitten (read this online). First, once we had the medical issues resolved and we knew it was behavioral, we kept him contained in a small room. He was using his box in that small room and didn't have any issues - perhaps because if he did make a mess, he couldn't escape it until we got home to clean it. We would let him out of the small room while we were home to keep an eye on him or after he had went since he only goes 1x per day.
In addition, whenever he used the box we made a big fuss and gave him treats, pet him, etc. Kind of like potty training a kid.
We then got to the point where we think he was holding it in until we were home to give him treats and affection - so we have now stopped the treats but still say good boy when he goes and pet him.
It's been a slow road, but he's now free around the apartment and hasn't had an accident - knock on wood - in almost a month. The past 4-5 months, I'd say, he has only had infrequent accidents, not pooping out of habit anymore.
We tried a second litter box and different litters but that didn't seem to work for our guy.
I hope this helps!

Re: my cat has IBD
Don't mean to cause a panic...but my cat was a vomiter, diagnosed with IBD given steriods before any tests biopsy. A year later she was gone from Lymphoma.
Just based on my experience, I'd suggest further testing because the steriods actually advanced her cancer.
She was 6 years old.
