My Christmas Baby...(A little crazy...)

My labor story is crazy! My due date was 12/23/08 and as many of you might recall, I was extremely uncomfortable and really anxious to give birth. I started getting contractions at about 5:30 on Christmas Eve. I didn't believe it was true, but by the second one, there wasno mistaking that pain! I took a shower and my DH started cleaning the apartment frantically--go figure! By 7:30, they were anywhere from 5-12 minutes apart, so we just went to the hospital. I didn't even call the dr., because I didn't want him to tell me to wait at home. By the time I got to the hospital they were excruciating and I was 4cm dilated. They admitted me.

I thought my water broke in the triage area, but it turned out to be my bloody show. They had to break my water--TWICE!!I got the epi around 9:30 and it was beautiful. My dr. wasn't working that night (I knew this would be the case if I gave birth on the 24th or 25th) and he had his partner covering for him. This dr. was the biggest a-hole imaginable. He started out by questioning why i took so much progesterone (my cervix was very short,) kept yawning and scratching his head in this very exaggerated way and told my DH he hoped the baby would be out by 2:30 am--at this point it was abut 10:30.

At midnight he came back and said he was going to turn off the epi at 1:30 because he wanted to make sure that I could push. I felt like crying because I know how painful the contractions would be if the epi was off. He then told told us that the bible said that you could steal money from a man and it is not as bad as stealing a night of sleep--you could repay money, but could never give back the sleep. Then he yawned again and left. I am not kidding.

He came back at 2 and turned off the epi. It wore off slowly, but when it was gone, it was the worst, most agonizing pain ever imaginable. I was screaming "help me!" and begging them to turn it back on. At about 2:30, I started pushing. I was in the craziest positions. They were holding back my legs, I was pulling on a sheet, I was holding onto this strange stick that pops up from the bed. Nothing was happening and I think I tore a muscle in my left thigh, because I killed me when I tried to move ot for 3 days! The baby was not budging. The dr. made a few comments about how the pushing was a "total waste of energy." The nurses were getting anxious because he was being such a jerk. At one point I had a stare down with him! A stare down with the dr. who would be delivering my child! I know DH was livid, but he was holding back because this was the dr. who was delivering his child. I pushed for about an hour and a half when the dr. pulled DH over and told him that the baby had not descended at all and that we could push all morning, but it would "destroy" me and he asked him to consider a c-section. As soon as I heard that, I knew they would turn the pain meds back on, so I screamed YES!!!

However, the c-section sucked. It was a different drug than in the first epi and it made me shake uncontrollably. They had to strap my arms and legs down. They made DH get all of our stuff from the labor and delivery room and change into scrubs then he was allowed into the room. They put a sheet up so I couldn't see the surgery, but he saw the whole thing. It was really fast. When I heard Chloe screaming, I was so happy. I didn't get to hold her or anything because they were still taking out the placenta and stitching me up. While they were stitching me up, the a-hole dr. got into a fight with one of the nurses. I swear. He asked for something and she didn't hear him and she asked him to repeat himself and then he accused her of never being in an operating room before. DH was holding Chloe and the anesthesiologist suggested that he step outside. Total bull shite. They just didn't want to him to be a witness to the nurse and dr. fighting while stitching up a patient.

They took Chloe away and wheeled me into recovery at around 5:30 am. I couldn't move or feel my legs for 3 hours. I didn't get to see Chloe or hold her until 11:00 and the nurses gave her a bottle even though I said I would be breastfeeding. I finally got a crappy, small room and was hooked up to so many different machines--IV, catheter, blood pressure, some weird pump for my legs. I had a fever too. I was also even more swollen than when I went into the hospital in the first place. I couldn't even walk until the 27th and getting out of bed to go to the bathroom was
traumatizing.

I seriously think that the dr. suggested giving me the c-section so that he could go home. He also refused to sign the cord blood papers because he was "too tired" and said we had to get them signed by the resident.

To top it all off, the next day I remembered that I had put my ugly keds, the only shoes that fir me in the last 3 months of pregnancy under a chair in the l&d room. I asked DH to go get them and they were nowhere to be found--the symbol of my painful and uncomfortable pregnancy lost forever! Chat Icon

If I had to do it all over again, I would do it a million times. I love by baby girl so much and DH and I feel so lucky and blessed to have her. She is the best Christmas present ever, and looking back on it, I can laugh a little at my cuckoo birth story!

Re: My Christmas Baby...(A little crazy...)

Congrats on your lil girl! I would report that jerky doctor to the proper channels. I am not sure-medical board or something? That was so unprofessional, but thankfully you have a Chat Icon here!
