My Daughter Was Bit For The Second Time In A Week At Her Daycare Center, What Would You Do-? VERY LONG
Chloe is 14 MOS old. She only goes to daycare two days a week. Last week I got a call that Chloe was in her highchair and had her hands flopping out and a child just passed by her and nipped her finger. No skin was broken (thank God) and they applied ice. They said it was random and the child never did this before. I was so upset at first being a first time Mom and all and having to deal with this but then friends calmed me down and said, "it's common at this age, this is their way of communicating." I let it go.
Well today, (mind you this happened on Wed of last week) she was at Day care again--goes Mon & Wed and I get a call in the afternoon that Chloe was bit AGAIN, by a different child. The actual DIRECTOR called me because she was the "Teacher" in the room today since Chloe's regular Teacher was out sick. They said she had a toy, the child tried to get it away, Chloe didn't want to give it up and BAM, the child bit her hand. They applied ice, there is a red mark, but no skin broken.
I am a Kindergarten Teacher and had my children with me when the call came in. I was flabergasted and it didn't register at first and I had a zillion questions to ask now.
I picked Chloe up before and went right to the OWNER (she's an on site Owner) and questioned in a nice way because I truly love my center and am normally very happy there, but asked all sorts of questions. Most importantly, how could this happen the last two times Chloe was in your care?? What is going on with the Supervision, etc. Now this is a 12-18 MOS room and their are a total of 7 kids, (the ratio at this age is 1-4) so two teacher's are USUALLY in there if more then 4 kids are in that day). She said these incidents were SO random and happened at the split of a second. She said of course if skin was broken, if this was a child who had been bitting excessivley, etc something would be done to reasses the situation but basically, at this age this is common. She also added that today, three adults were in the room when this happened. That was WORSE to me! THREE ADULTS and nobody could intervene in the confrentation to avoid this?
Did I do the right thing talking to the owner? I let it go the first time but not TWO TIMES in a row that she is there! I don't want to question myself that this daycare isn't good because my DH says it could happen at the next place too.
What would you ladies have done/do?
I am SO petrified now that next time skin might be broken and then I have to freak out over her catching a disease, etc:)
Sorry this is SOOO long and thank you if you got this far in my post and can help me here!

Ds has been bit at daycare, hes had his front tooth chipped, hes fallen and split his lip (once, it was twice in one weeks time). I just chalk it up to the age group and these things happen.
I totally get how these things happen, even if the children are being watched like hawks, if the teacher is more than a foot away, these things happen so fast.
As a mom, Eddie has fallen and I couldnt catch him in time. Hes hit his cousin with me sitting right there, but it happens in the blink of an eye.
I do think you have every right to speak to the director and voice your concerns though and ask her what her plan of action is to help prevent this in the future.
