My Dog Is Going Blind!
Just found out this Saturday that my dog, who has not even turned 5 years old yet, is going to be 100% blind within the year due to advanced retinal disease. The opthamologist said that on a scale from 1 - 10, his vision loss is already at a 10, and that there is nothing he can do to reverse it. I'm so sad for my little furry boy.

Re: My Dog Is Going Blind!
Im soooo sorry.... but a vet once told me that doggies "see" more often with their noses than with their eyes, because they rely so heavily on their sense of smell. I know how difficult it must be for you to go through this with your dog but witht he great care you will give to him he will pull through just fine.

Re: My Dog Is Going Blind!
I know dogs are supposed to fare better than humans in this respect but it's so sad to watch how quickly it's progressing. He's already fallen down my house stairs, many times. I worry about my boy. The doc told us to not move any furniture or his dog bowl or anything because these are his last days of seeing and he has to memorize where everything is. He also said that it's a good thing we have Rascal, my other dog, so that he can have a dog to follow.
Rascal's got so many problems of his own. He's only 4 and he's had three operations. He hardly has any intestines left (they had to cut them out when he swallowed a small piece of an 'indestructible' KONG ball) and he suffered from Legg Perthes Disease where they had to break his leg bone, and now one leg is shorter. His legs shake so badly to this day. I have the worst luck with dogs and I just love them so much it hurts. Thanks for your support. I'm glad to hear that some of you have known blind dogs that have fared well.

Re: My Dog Is Going Blind!
I am so sorry! My dog went blind as she aged and she just adapted to it. Your doctor is right though, never move your furniture because your lil guy will have memorized where everything is, if you have a basement I would reccomend getting a baby gate so that he doesnt fall down the stairs. If you have steps going out side just for a while I would walk out with him but eventually he will be able to go down them by himself.

Re: My Dog Is Going Blind!
I wish I never moved out of my ranch. I have steps EVERYWHERE now. I have a colonial splanch. Five steps up to the living room, five more steps to the bedrooms, tons of steps down to the basement, etc. We also have a railing upstairs with wide openings that he's already fallen down. I'm seriously so stressed over this. We have to revamp my whole house QUICKLY!
