My egg or his sperm???
Okay, a few days ago I received a call from my doctor after our first attempt at egg retrieval. He told me that despite having retrieved eight eggs (three that were mature right away), NONE fertilized. This was with ICSI but no luck. The doc wants to try again this time changing some meds. He kept saying, "I don't know how this happened." What the heck?? Can someone please, please, offer thoughts? How did this happen? I want to make sure it doesn't happen again. I was devestated to receive his call!

Re: My egg or his sperm???
I hate to say this but every IVF cycle is an experiment. They don't know how your body is going to react until they get those eggs out, everything could appear great (your E2 is good and they see lots of follies). And from my experience every IVF cycle is completely different. One cycle I had 9 follicles all growing good (no lead) and at ER they got 3 eggs and nothing in the other follicles. And only 1 was mature. The cycle after that, they coasted me one more day, protocol change (and some supplements on my own) and bamm 15 eggs retrieved, 10 mature and 8 fertilize. I mean it could not have been more different.
However, it wouldn't be a bad idea for both you and DH to take some supplements or keep away from certain things.
I am sorry that you are going through this, I know how horrible it all is when things don't go the way they are supposed to. But, dust yourself off and don't let IF win. Get right back into it if you can. Change in protocol will probably be good. Good luck.

If you don't mind me asking, what supplements were you on for your second cycle?

Re: My egg or his sperm???
I am sorry you are dealing with this. The truth is that 8 eggs with only 3 mature is a poor response to stimulation for IVF. IVF is a number game and the more eggs you get at retrieval the better your chances of fertilization. In your next cycle, your RE should try some tricks to get more eggs from you. Are you dealing with diminished ovarian reserve and high FSH? Best of luck next cycle.

If they trigger you too early, you could also have a poor result. The embryos don't have time to go thru meiosis.

Re: My egg or his sperm???
IMO getting only 3 mature eggs from an IVF cycle would be cause for concern. I do not know your background like your age or anything, but I know that my RE let me stim for an extra few days to give my follies a chance to mature. IVF cycles a lot of times do need to be tweaked. Mainly because of my age, I typically averaged around 8-10 a cycle. And while due to poor egg quality we had a lower than normal fertilization and growth, maturity was never an issue. i'd be sure to discuss it with your RE.

Re: My egg or his sperm???
This is my first time using this chat, web-site. What is DH?
More importantly, what supplements are you familiar with? Are the supplements for enhancing egg quality??
thanks.

Re: My egg or his sperm???
I am also curious to know what the docs can test for to determine why my eggs did not fertilize with my husband's sperm? I am 34 yrs, my husband is 32. He had all of the sperm analysis testing done before I started the IVF meds.
Does anyone know if any such tests even exist?? I just fear that our gestational carrier might give up and not want to keep waiting around for the eggs to fertilize.
any help will be much appreciated.
