My first day at the new office....NOT
So I checkl the weather and the roads, no mention of anything bad in Westcehster, and so I leave with 2 hours to get to white plains. 2 hours later I'm on the Van Wyck, about to get on the rbidge, but all of the signs and radio traffic reports are saying that the Hutch, the Bronx River Pkway and the Sawmill are all closed. Which means the local roads are probably worse. I had to turn around and come home I just got home a little while ago and I'm working from home on what was supposed to by first day in the office!
I feel so crappy about it, but I really don't know any alternate routes and with the kind of flooding they were describing..ahhh.
The one fortunate thing was that since I was switching from te NJ office to white plains, I have all of my files with me. The upside is I am now working from home in PJ's sipping starbucks

Re: My first day at the new office....NOT
it sucks because this is only my 2nd week so I feel crappy saying "BTW, I know we had a meeting and all of these plans, but I'm not coming in today"
My boss was cool about it, since when I spoke with him he was still at Grand Central and still han't gotten there. But I think he was also annoyed because if not for it being my first day there and us having had a whole meeting planned for 10am (which obviously has to be postponed), he probably would not have had to make the insane trip to White Plains today at all. So I feel really bad, but I didn't really know what else to do.

When did you check? All the parkways have been closed since last night. It was even on CBS--I know it hard to find out local traffic when you are coming from a different area--not all the radio stations mention it.
It's a mess up here--glad you are home safe & sound. I am still attempting to make it to downtown Manhattan in a little while.

This morning on NY1 and the weather channel, it didn't say ANYTHING about the roads upstate. I knew it was going to be difficult, but I didn't know utnil I was already on the road that the highways were completely closed. If it were long island, I would be able to get around it, but I don't know Westchester.
Good luck getting downtown!

Yeah, see that's the problem-- you get NY1 that doesn't cover up here & I get News 12, that doens't tell me how the subways are.
Silly rain!

1010 wins seems to have a little of everything.
When I was driving it said delays of 1 hour on all trains into Penn Sta because of a flooded tunnel. And there were major delas on the 1,2,3,5 and A,C trains.
Good luck!

Re: My first day at the new office....NOT
You're better working from home off on a day like today. The flooding is very bad. Even the train that goes from Grand Central to White Plains had problems last night and 1 hour delays today.
If you ever need to know the traffic in Westchester, tune into 103.9FM or (better reception in car) WHUD which is 100.7FM. Both will give you Westchester traffic reports.
I would also ask around your office for anyone that lives around Yonkers, Scarsdale, Hartsdate to tell you how to navigate alternate routes to your office. And maybe purchase a road map to keep in your car.

Re: My first day at the new office....NOT
in the rain- you should always take I-95
it was slow going- but I got to stamford in about 1 hour and 15 minutes
those parkways are always closed in the rain
I know you live closer to the van wyck- but you might have been better off taking the cross island to the throngs neck on a day like this
I have been doing this for 6 months- and learned the hard way never to get on or near the hutch in the rain

Thanks! I am going to look this up for tomorrow. I really just didn't know and I had no visbility on the van wyck and I didn't know what the roads would bne like once I got there...
I hear mamorneck was a mess.
ALSO, it took me well over an hour just to get to the whitestone Bridge.
On the REALLY upside, my boss ende dup doing the same thing, turning around and working from home, so I don't feel so bad. I feel bad he had a shytty commute too, but I'm glad I wasn't the only one who didn't make it.
