My first Thanksgiving without my parents
Thanksgiving was my favorite holiday to be with family. The house always smelled so good and looked like a Hallmark store display. My mom used to kick butt with all of her excessive cooking. Dad used to just REST as he was a retailer and Black Friday was a big day for him in business.
Today, I will not be with my family as DH and I alternate years but that just reinforces how much I miss them. I told my sister how it will be hard for me not to be with them today and she wrote back this story:
"Thanksgiving was "our" holiday, I think, because it was only a week or two before that that we moved into the house and Mom and Dad were so excited to be there that they made Thanksgiving and, the story goes, we ate on boxes. Of course, I have no recollection of this, but I find it amazing when I think of it that Mom and Dad were so young, so full of excitement and were so proud and happy to be in their new home with their kids and wanted to have their family there to celebrate, boxes and all. Mom loved telling the "Thanksgiving on boxes story." It might be one of the few that she told accurately and did not embellish too much."
I miss this story and I was born 6 years after this event happened. I miss my Mom and Dad. I hope I can create memories like this for my angel Abby.

Thank you Gail.
Now instead of the kids playing in the front of the house, there is a "For Sale" sign. The times they are a changing.

Your sister will tell Abby many stories of her grandparents, so the happy memories will always live on.

Re: My first Thanksgiving without my parents
I know Thanksgiving was tough, followed by the rest of the holiday season.
I can't pretend to know your loss but I have no doubt you will be telling Abby stories of her grandparents & making your own in years to come.
Long live Thanksgiving on Boxes! Thankfully, we know the excessive cooking trait got handed down.

Re: My first Thanksgiving without my parents
I hope you and your family had a peaceful Thanksgiving.
Like you Thanksgiving used to be my families favorite holiday. But after my dad passed I just can't get into it anymore. I will always remember fondly the Thanksgiving that snowed my dad and I in on LI and the rest of the family was together in NJ. My dad didnt want to dissapoint his little girl so walked to the local Meat Farms, got a turkey, box of stuffing and potatoes and frozen apps and cooked us a beautiful meal. Was it the tastiest no, but the most wonderful Thanksgiving memory.
hugs to you, I completely understand how you feel!
