My friend's fiance died this morning--she was 39 and had cervical cancer...
She didn't get regular paps because she didn't have insurance. By the time she was diagnosed, the cancer had spread to her bones, major organs etc...
Please remember to get your yearly cervical checks! She was only 6 years older than me and all I can think about is my DD...

sorry for you loss, i was there with you a few years back when my coworker/friend at waldbaums got cancer and died at 36 and she had two small children. She never got paps because our insurance didn't cover it (at waldbaums because we were p/t) i always went and paid just to be on the safe side. It sickens me to hear stories like this because for most people this is reality, no insurance = some form of illness and typically major complications if not death because of it.

I am so sorry for your friend's fiance. That is so terrible and sad.
I can speak from first hand experience how important yearly paps are. I had some abnormal results about 4 years ago and it came back as pre-cancerous cells. I had a procedure done to scrape away the cells before they had a chance to turn into anything worse and am now pregnant with my 2nd child.
They say that cervical cancer is one of the most avoidable cancers if you get yearly paps done because they can detect and get rid of abnormalities before they become cancer.
That is just heartbreaking that not having insurance would prevent someone from getting the medical care they need to stay healthy. My heart goes out to her family.

This is heartbreaking, especially since it would have been preventable in all likelihood if she had insurance. As far as I'm concerned, this is one area govt. absolutely can and should get involved in since the system we have now leaves so many out of the loop.
I am very sorry for your loss.

THat is so sad. The test is so easy and the treatment is simple as well. I've had the pre cancerous cells before and had them removed.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I was not close to this woman, but definitely knew who she was and saw her around a lot.
After rereading the original post, I would like to say I am sorry if it seems that I politicized her death at all by saying that she didn't have insurance and therefore didn't get tested regularly. I know it is a simple procedure and even if she did have insurance who knows if she would have gone to the dr? Just some randomness running through my mind.
Anyway, I thank you all again for your well wishes and want to remind everyone to get their pap!
