my "late talker" with poor articulation at 18 months can now...
josh only said- uh-uh (uh-oh), dada and mama till 15+ months. then when some words came they all sounded the same, "baba" was bubbles, bailey, baby, banana, and balloon, etc.
NOW at 18 months he says sentences!!!
"i want kisses please" "more cheese please" "i sit" "all done" "no moon, all gone" (he loves seeing the moon and hates when it's too cloudy.)
i've been trying to keep a log of words he uses (not just what he repeats) and he's up to 119!!! he still signs when he talks though.
and his words are now understandable by other people!
my favorite words are helicaca (helicopter), peas! (please), and gabach (garbage).
i can't believe the HUGE turn around and wanted to tell all the moms of later talkers to try not to stress as much as i did, it will come!
now if only i could get him to eat!
thanks for listening!!!

josh's speech therapist (who really just works on his feeding issues) said that he didn't even babble age appropriately. it'll come

WOW -- I wouldn't call him a late talker, I'd call him an early talker. Ale doesn't really say any words and she's 18 months. But with the bilingual thing it's normal they be delayed. Still, I don't know ANY 18 month olds that talk that much!!

That is amazing!
Did you get him help when you thought he was behind or did he just naturally have a word explosion?

Re: my "late talker" with poor articulation at 18 months can now...
thanks everyone! i am so proud and soooo relieved! i say he was delayed in langauge more b/c he didn't babble till super late and then his speech therapist said he was 6 months behind in the way he was babbling.

josh has sensory integration disfunction and low muscle tone (including low oral muscle tone) and he throws up several times a day from it. so b/c of that and b/c he was barely babbling i got him evaluated by e.i.. but he didn't qualify at first so i paid privately with a speech therapist for a few months until he qualified for services.
i'm a special ed teacher that worked for many years in a speech and language school so i always worked a lot with him and gave him a language rich environment. the speech he got was minimal b/c they mainly focus on his aweful eating and vomitting issues. so with that said i think therapy works but i think it most of it came from him naturally and then from me & dh constantly labeling things, reading, doing flash cards, modeling, and sign language (which helped so much in him understanding communication.)
