My maltese-Shihtzu mix won't poop on pad but WILL pee on it - Help!
hi everyone
i have a four month old Maltese-Shihtzu mix and i also have a Shihtzu-poodle mix who is four months old as well. the shihtzu poodle will pee and poop on the wee wee pad, but the maltese shihtzu will pee on the pad but will NEVER poop on it!
when we see him pooping somewhere other than the pad, we put him on the pad and he screams and cries and runs off and literally has a nervous breakdown! why wont he poop on the pad? i dont know what to do anymore!
thank you!

Is there any way you can just bring him outside to poop and pee?

When you figure it out let me know, my 8 month yorkie hardly poops on the pad. Part of I think is because his pooping is such a process. Sometimes I see him start on the pad and walk around in circles and the poop finally pops out somewhere else.

I don't know if you want to hear this, but my dog is 1 and a half and litter box trained (he also goes outside). He will pee in the right place, but insists on pooping nearby but not on. A lot of this has to do with the amount of pacing and circling he seems to need to do in order to poop. The litter box just doesn't give him enough space. We really tried, but it would get him upset and then he would kinda hide and poop. If we don't push the issue he will poop really near the pad. We have very forgiving linoleum in the area, so we have kinda given up and we just clean up immediately. If we ever move, I think we will try to have a larger space for him to go indoors (of course there is always outdoors).
Good luck!

OMG my puppy does the SAME thing! he's too funny! i have been taking him outside when i get up and when i get home, and he seems to hold it during the day - i really wish he would learn to poop on the pad - i dont know what his deal is!

i think you're 100% right
when i read your post i said to myself, OMG that is what Otis does! he literally circles and cirles for the longest time - sniffing around and trying to find the PERFECT place to poop! i have to walk him for at least 15 minutes before he decides where he wants to poop!
i wish he would learn to go on the pad - it makes me feel bad if i cant get home right after work and i know he needs to be walked!

Re: My maltese-Shihtzu mix won't poop on pad but WILL pee on it - Help!
What about putting three pads down so he's got a larger area to choose from?
I know what you mean, my dog is very particular about where he poops too. It's inconvenient for us but really, it's part of his personality and what makes him unique, so we just make the best of it. It's unnatural for them to poop inside on a mat so if this doesn't work, what about hiring a dog walker?
Oh, another thing, I can't remember where I saw it but there was a stone type thing that claims it has some kind of scent on it that makes dogs want to poop near it. Maybe check out Drs Foster and Smith or stores like it?
