my marathon experience... not a pretty one

i woke up this morning with the knowledge that i ran a marathon! yay!

was it a pretty experience... no!
but even in the ugly experiences beauty can be found!

i was over-confident in my ability. i started out WAY TOO FAST. so fast that my chest hurt from how hard i was breathing. i started to fall apart at the half-way mark. i wanted to just give up. at about mile 15, i got a second wind, and we were able to pass 16 people. i started to feel stronger.

at mile 20 we fell apart. running was a lot less, walking was a lot more. at about mile 23, i felt vehicles behind us. well, DS, and older gentleman, and i were THE LAST "RUNNERS." the older gentleman asked the police officer if we were the last ones. they said YEP.

we kept each other motivated... at this point, we were at mile 25. we started getting the most amazing cheers!! i kept cheering back that we were bring up the rear in STYLE... i was wearing a birthday hat the ENTIRE WAY lol.

the older man kept saying that he was working hard to keep up with us. so we made a promise that we would stick together.

when we came around the final bend, the MC said we were the last, and they started playing the ROCKY THEME SONG. i got a bit emotional and decided to run the last few hundred feet.

my son is such an amazing kid!!!!!!
he let the older man cross the finish line before him! yes, that's my boy!!

it ended up being his reward!
he got a gerbera daisy as he crossed the finish line and got a bagillion pictures taken of him. even the marathon PR guy came over and asked us questions!

it was HARD. but i did it!!
i had already promised myself that 2014 will be the year i back off from distance and work on speed, yesterday underlined that this is what i need to do.

again, it wasn't pretty, but i EARNED my medal!

i AM a marathoner, damn it!
and no one can take that away from me!

Thats awesome and very inspiring! I think to me its more inspiring to hear about someone like you who had a hard time but pushed through for themselves than those who have great PR times or whatever!

Re: my marathon experience... not a pretty one

CONGRATULATIONS!! We all get the same medal - finishing is a HUGE accomplishment so enjoy it!! Marathons are NOT easy, you totally learn to respect the distance once you do one. Remember, you did something that less than 1% of the population has done.
