my parents were robbed today!!
my mom was literally gone for an hour all day, and their house was robbed!!
she went out to the store, and came home and her dog ( a little yorkie) was outside. the front door was also opened. now... they live sort of in the "country" down in south jersey so they're not always good about locking their doors... and her first thought was that she forgot to shut the front door when they left ( shes done stupider stuff  ). BUT... she decided to look around. she went up to their bedroom, and her jewelry box was missing!  luckily, she keeps her favorite jewelry someplace else, so it was mostly older, mismatched stuff in there. BUT... her grandmothers engagment ring was also on her dresser, and they took that too 
BUT thats all they took- her laptop was in the same area, they didn't take that... didn't take any cash that was in a drawer....
her dog is NUTS! i think i posted on here that he attacked the Fed Ex guy one time while i was dog sitting... and i was right there! i can only imagine what he did to somebody he didn't know when my mom wasn't around!! so we think thats probably why they only took the little bit that they took... they were probably like " this dogs nuts- lets get out of here!"
BUT.. its still very scary! and she is really upset about loosing her grandmothers ring it was a beautiful 1 carrot diamond
they called the police and they took a report and everything... so we'll see what happens. my parents doors were unlocked, but the police actually said thats a good thing, because there was less damage becasue they didn't have to break in.... they said that if somebody wants to get in, they're gonna get in no matter what... so at leats now my parents don't have to replace a door or window or anything.
so... just be careful- especially with the economy being bad, i'm sure these things are happening more often.

that is terrible, when I was a teenager our house was robbed, its the most violating feeling!
I'm glad your Mom & the dog are ok!

sorry to hear that  glad they are ok.
my FIL lives out in Amaganssett and they always leave their doors unlocked...me, growing up in Queens, couldn't believe it...they are fine with it, but just like your parents, it can happen to anyone!!!

I hate when people are robbed but it breaks my heart when priceless sentimental things are taken

I'm so sorry! That is the worst feeling
My younger sister who has had some crappy things delt her this past year got
robbed also a few months ago.
They also took all her jewelery and my Mom had just started giving us some heirloom family jewelery;' The detectives think it was her across the street neighbor!

I am sorry to hear this.
One word of advice (since my parents house was broken into a few years back), tell them to keep an eye out in jewelry stores in the area that you can pawn jewelry.
My parents were able to find a few pieces this way.
