My Sister Adopted A Doggie - UPDATE
I took these pics this morning and was very excited that she got a doggie. However, since she got him on Tuesday he's been agressive and goes to bite if we try to pet him. Apparently they didn't make this clear at the shelter. He seems to be attached to her already, but not her son. It's so sad... I think she wants to take him back. I tried to tell her to give him more time. I was affraid myself. I feel torn. :0(
Update: OMG I am so furious right now. I just found out my sister returned the dog to the shelter on Sunday! I am practically in tears beacause I think this is a kill shelter. The Animal Care & Control in Brooklyn. I looked on their website and he's not listed. They assured her he was not going to be put to sleep, I am still heartbroken. Sorry to vent Image Attachment(s):

Re: My Sister Adopted A Doggie
What kind of dog is he? How old is he? He could just be adjusting...please give him some time, maybe have him go to some training...this happens too often where people just give up I mean, of course, safety first...It could be about the way you approach him too, try letting him sniff you first even if it means just letting him do his own thing and sniff around and get used to his surroundings, then he may warm up

The poor thing - he was probably abused or something. She should give him more time, but at the same time I'm sure she worries for her son.

What a cute dog. The aggression is definitely scary and of course safety comes first. Does the shelter offer any free obedience training? If not, I would def suggest Bark Busters, they are amazing. I hope time will help -- I wish your sister all the best. Keep us posted

He was a stray and the ASPCA picked him up. They said he is a toy poodle and approx 2 years old.

My sister called the ASPCA and they said all they can do is trade her for another dog. I know my sister is trying and she doens't want to bring the doggie back.

Such a same. He is a male, right? If the puppy were female, I would consider trying to take her in. If you want some info on trainers, let me know. Good luck to your sister

I know my sister is trying and she doens't want to bring the doggie back. unfortunately this is a tough situation. Bringing the dog back to the shelter is only going to be dertrimental to the dog, but I am sure she is worried for her families' safety.
Did the ASPCA offer any advice on how to help break the aggression? There are some things you can do to help the dog feel more safe, and therefore, less inclined to be aggressive.
One of the first things I would do is to wait patiently to let the dog come to you. You mentioned in the first post that whenever someone tries to pet the pup that is when the aggression is shown. Maybe holding a treat across the room and allowing the dog to come to you at their pace might be a good ice breaker.
GL & also try Bark Busters...they have a great reputation

Re: My Sister Adopted A Doggie
Yeah for adoption!!! Tell her to have him on a leash at all times... especially if people are coming over. IT can be a short leach (2-3 feet) with no looop at the end. This way she can correct him for growling or barking... Also when you meet a new dog (especially from a shelter) you shouldn pet it first thing when you meet it. Let him smell you and get used to you. Going over a dots head is never good! Only acknowledge the dog if he come to you. Also, SHE MUST WALK HIM!!! RIGHT AWAY, everyday!! Good luck
Make sure she watches the dog whisperer on ch. 162 Friday at 9 pm!!!
GOOD LUCK
