My son has a fever (103.8)- please help.
My 14 month old son was given amoxicillin on Tuesday for a mild ear infection. Yesterday he got a fever which was 100.2. Today it was 101.9, I called the doc because he had projectile vomitted his bottle, etc. Doc told us to just keep giving him formula, tylenol, etc. His temp is now 103.8... which I feel is extremely high. Should I call the doctor again? Is this temp dangerous? Anything else I should do? Please help. Thanks.

I would absolutely call the doctor again, that is a high fever, and with the fever if he can't keep anything down, he could become dehydrated, so try to give him clear fluids. Let us know how it goes!

Sorry to hear your little one is sick. My son always runs high fevers like that. First of all MOtrin is better than tylenal but switch off each dose. Just remember that MOtrin is ever 6 hours. ALso, give him a Luke Warm bath to get the fever down BUT do not over dress him. He is already hot - put on long sleeved cotton PJ's. It is scary but he will be fine
You can FM me if you have other questions

Re: My son has a fever (103.8)- please help.
no need to call the doc, that is not too bad, my kids run 104.8 and the doc always tells me it is a good thing, i would make sure he can move his neck up and down w/o pain, if it seems ok, then give him motrin, 4 hrs later give him tylenol and then 2 hrs after that give the dose of motin that was due at hr 6. i know it's scary, but a fever can bring on vomiting, also give 1 tsp of pedialyte every 5 min for 1 hr, this will insure hydration. good luck, i hate those high fevers!!! With my 1st I was crazed by high fevers too, but now, by #3 it's just parf of the course!! feel better
ps -keep in mind, this is the time of night when temps re at peak!

Nighttime is the worse time for fevers - and they go up very high. Make sure he's hydrated and going through diapers as he usually would. Call the pediatrician for the peace of mind you need.
Has he had amoxicillan before?

Re: My son has a fever (103.8)- please help.
Alternating fever medications is not recommended by the "American Family Physicians". There are several reasons: 1) there is no proof that this method is safe; 2) there is no proof that it brings the fever down faster; 3) it can be confusing and can lead to overdose. The best method is to choose 1 drug and stick with it following the dosing regimen exactly.
Many people believe that Motrin works better than Tylenol, but this is often because Tylenol is underdosed. Many doctors recommend 10mg/kg of each drug, but the dosing of Tylenol is 10-15mg/kg and the dosing of Motrin is 5-10mg/kg. So, if you use 10mg/kg of either drug it is fine, but you have to know that you are using the high end of Motrin but the low end of Tylenol. To figure out your baby's weight in kg, just divide their weight in pounds by 2.2. For example, 22 pounds divided by 2.2 equals 10 kilograms (kg). The thing to watch out for if you use Motrin is that if your child isn't eating because of being sick, there is a greater chance of the medicine upsetting their stomachs.
Everybody just please be careful when using these medications in their babies! The concentrations of the different formulations are often different and can lead to overdose. Read the concentration on the label carefully, and ask the pharmacist if you have any questions. There are several pharmacies open 24 hours, and the pharmacist can now be reached for questions at any hour.
You can also FM me if you have any questions.

the docs in the pediatric ER @ North Shore recommend "piggy-backing", that is where I learned it from, as does all the docs in my ped group. I just called my pharmacy and they OK'd it too, I guess every practitioner has different views on it, just as they do on vaccines, allergies, colic, etc. Its pretty scary if it is dangerous to piggy-back and there are so many clinicians still recommending it. thanks for the info though.
mishy- i hope your little guy is feeling better today!

Re: My son has a fever (103.8)- please help.
Thanks so much everybody. We decided to wait a bit longer to see how he was doing, and the tylenol broke the fever. He got his second wind and was up longer than usual, which we didn't mind because he was finally feeling better and acting like himself. He woke up at 12 with a fever again, so I gave him a bit more medicine and today he is once again, running around all over the place. The fever was only 100.5 this morning. It was scary since this was his first high fever, so thank you to all who helped! I truly appreciate it.

Re: My son has a fever (103.8)- please help.
What you can do, and what always works for my daughter is cooling her down. What I mean is putting cool towels on her head, under her arms, behind her knees. This helps bring the temperature down and makes her feel much better. I am not talking about cold packs, just some tap temperature cool towels. This helps us alot and it also brings down the fever so that she feels better.
Hope it helps!
Good luck!
