My son just fell straight backwards from a standing position and hit the back of his head on his playmat
My IDIOT sister was supposed to be watching him - where was she????????? ON THE COMPUTER PLAYING ON THE INTERNET!
I walked into the room just in time to see him whack the back of his head He went straight back - he was standing up and went straight backwards - he was on his alphabet playmat but, it is on a hard wood floor so it is not that soft :( :( :(
I am SO WORRIED RIGHT NOW. He is acting normal - so far, no bump on his head - he cried for a minute or two and then immediately stopped -maybe because he was stunned by hearing me scream at my sister
But I keep thinking about shaken baby syndrome and how hard his head must have hit the ground and if this could have caused him brain damage?????????

Re: My son just fell straight backwards from a standing position and hit the back of his head on his playmat
It's very scary. My son has been sick this week, and has been falling and hitting his head alot. I always get worried, but I make sure to watch him carefully after. And I also always ask him to do things that he usually does (clap your hands, blow kisses, so big, etc) Hope he feels better (and you too)!

Re: My son just fell straight backwards from a standing position and hit the back of his head on his playmat
Both my kids have done this. The first time DD did it, I freaked out and called the ped. She was holding onto the couch and the dog was sitting on top and jumped off and knocked her down in the process.
The dr said, "I know it sounds terrible but they need to fall 8 feet to sustain a true trauma."
Just watch for any vomitting or odd behavior. DD went right to sleep after it (and the DR said to wake her after an hour or so if she did go to sleep which I did not since it was her normal nap time).

When DD was a baby she fell off the bed and on to a hardwood floor. the Dr. said to just watch for a bump try not to let her sleep for a while (and if they do, to wake them up periodically) and see if they continue to eat and drink normally.

This has happened to both my boys .... Ped. said if he fell from a height double his height we should have him x-rayed.

Jeremy fell off his daddys lap onto the school tile floor. He screamed/cried. I called the ped and he said as long as he didn't black out and he isn't acting confused he is fine. Just watch him for those things for the next couple of hours. I love my ped. He doesn't get worked up about that stuff

DS did this while holding onto my heavy kitchen chair. Straight back with the chair on top of him. It was so scary He was FINE though, so hang in there. Look for eye's going cross, lethargic, etc .... he shouod be fine though.

Re: My son just fell straight backwards from a standing position and hit the back of his head on his playmat
It is SO scary...DD fell off her changing table when she was 7 months, and she's banged her head several times...
Like others said - just watch him for abnormal behavior / excessive sleepiness / vomiting / etc. I also always get the small flash light and make sure DD's pupils are responsive...

Re: My son just fell straight backwards from a standing position and hit the back of his head on his playmat
My DD fell just like that about a month ago on the kitchen tile floor which is very very hard, and my DH and I were BOTH there while it happened , we were standing next to her, anything can happen to a child in a split second and it is so scary. I called the doc and he said not to worry about it as long as she didn't hit her temple or forehead and as long as she seemed fine(which she did). I cried so much that day, bc I was so scared and worried and I felt like we were such horrible parents for not protecting her , but DD was fine after crying a minute or so. I hope your DC feels better

Re: My son just fell straight backwards from a standing position and hit the back of his head on his playmat
I hope he feel better. Sara flipped herself out of a high chair last year as we were strapping her in and fell on the back of her head . She was limp immedialtely after and couldnt stay awake. Thats when you know there is a problem - she didnt even cry. I think they say if the child crys they should be ok. It was the scariiest night ever
