My Strep B test came back Positive
went to my Dr's appt this morning 37 weeks and 1 day preggo, and found out my Strep B test came back POSITIVE, i am definitely disappointed, but what can you do, all else is well, nothing much going on down there, but thankfully the beans head is in position...
dr is sending me for sonogram at his other office next week, to check on size, was surprised by this, but whatever the Dr. wants is fine with me as long as my little one is fine.

Re: My Strep B test came back Positive
What exactly does it mean anyway? My Dr. never went into why the test was important.
Sorry!!

I'm so sorry!!
I think it means that the baby my conract it on the way down the birth canal, so they either give mom some drugs, or baby some drugs...not sure.
You'll be fine and so will baby!!

Re: My Strep B test came back Positive
I was also positive for Group B Strep at my first prenatal appointment when they did all the cultures. The Dr. told me it was nothing to worry about, it is treated with IV antibiotics during labor. He did say however if and when my water breaks that I have to go straight to the hospital for the antibiotics.

Re: My Strep B test came back Positive
FYI: Many women are + for group B strep, for some it's a normal flora. What usually happens is the mother will receive IV antibiotics during labor or when her water breaks. By the mom getting the antibiotics the baby is covered.
Many years ago women were not tested for group B strep, thus not treated and unfortnately many babies were infected. That is why ALL women get tested now and if I remeber correctly it's usually done in your last trimester.

Re: My Strep B test came back Positive
I tested positive with my first born, it wa sno big deal, they hooked me up to antibiotics and monitored the baby for the 1st 24 hrs, but other than that, it was really no big deal. I tested negative with my 2nd but they treated me anyway for prevntative measures, and they will treat me with this current pregnancy as well, it is normal flora that is present in some women's rectal/vaginal/GI tract, it can come and go!

Re: My Strep B test came back Positive
We were talking about strep b in my labor classes the other night.
she said it is SO common, that it's normal, nothing you can do will cause it or prevent it, and that they'll give you antibiotics during labor (which they do in so many cases anyway) so that the baby won't contract it as it's going through the birth canal.
the only thing my lamaze coach said, is that once you find out you have strep b, or if you find out you don't have it even, it's okay to continue having intercourse with your partner, but use a condom, because he can have it also and there really isn't a way for them to test the guys, it doesn't really effect them anyway, but even if you get a neg culture, you can get it from your partner and ten end up having it for delivery.

I have never heard of this. My docs never mentioned this to me and this is my 3rd child, I think they would have more precautions and make it universal if they thought you could contract it after the culture has been taken, especially since manyof us use sex to induce labor, and strep B in a newborn could be deadly. Check again with your lamaze coach, I don't think this is something you need to worry about, if it was I would think that everyone would get anitibiotics regardless of the week 36 culture.

Re: My Strep B test came back Positive
I think it was more for if you get a negative test, so that you don't get it between the test and actual delivery without them knowing since they don't re-test once it's done at 36 weeks.

Glad things are going well otherwise. I had this too and no effects on me or the baby - only had to go straight to the hospital when the water broke for IV antibiotics.
