My take on swine flu, and anything else big, bad and scary, before I hit the hay...
Guess what?
Ever see The Village?
If we have a boogey man, it keeps us in line. We hide behind the powers that be like a 2 year old behind mommy's leg....
There are no WMD's. We are poor as sh*t. We need something to be afraid of. And there is always something big, bad, and going bump in the night all the friggen time.
We know this because "THEY" tell us so.
I am far from a conspiracy theorist, but when these things are overblown and thrown in our face and shoved down our throats, all I can think is "What is the REAL demon behind the mask?" Not to mention the age old fears of venturing past our own back yard. Who knows what evil diseases lurk if we venture too far? Stay inside folks! And shop online. A lot.
That scares me even more.
Truth is - I am sure there are diseases and mayhem bubbling away in test tubes somewhere that would really curl our hair.
Just my own 2 cents.
And no, I'm not in any altered state. Unless tired counts!

Regardless of what my government DOES or does NOT tell, I am scared of germ, worse now that I have done cancer. When I was going through Chemo I picked up MRSA that before me killed one ore two football players/students. It scared the bjesus of it me and wanted to hear all about it.
(Some people know on here that I got an infection and turned septic and my body shut down, we later learned the doctors did not think I would live to walk away then.
I'll talk all in the info I can to a=avoid that.
ooh and before all the this and before chemo and before cancer, I am a germaphobe anyway. Especially sitting on an airline seat on a Jet-blue like plane. The material across where you seat, where your head is, doesn't get anything, the knob to bring the tray down...nope, not cleaned and the good old button for TV/Music. No sanitation wipe out there either, blaaaaaah

I'm totally against the mass hysteria, but i think its remiss to also assume that some of the things you mentioned don't exist.

Of course everything exists - but there are other things that are used to mask that fact, and distract us. And of course someone with a compromised immune system has to be concerned - this was not written to downplay that at all!

I don't think "THEY" are trying to scare anyone.
I think the MEDIA doesn't have a lot to talk about so they make it a top story. Their sole job is to create eye catching headlines & frankly, it is a valid concern.
Personally I'm no more worried about the swine flu than I am another terrorist attack but it is foolish to assume I couldn't catch it or there won't be another one. If I worked in a college where there were a ton of spring breakers that returned to Mexico, you bet your azz I'd be highly concerned.

ITA with this. People that have compromised immunity such as elderly people, people on chemo, and newborns are in a whole different class than everyone else. I don't think anyone would think that people who fall into this category are overreating.
People are coming into the ER saying that "mexican" landscapers were cutting their lawn and then the next day they coughed/sneezed and they think they have swine flu. Give me a break.
What gets me personally, is the parents of children bringing their kids to the ER panicked about swine flu, but they refuse to vaccinate their children against much more common and deadlier diseases. That is what T's me off the most to tell you the truth

ITA. Either that or the media figured out people are sick or hearing about the bad economy and have been turning the news off--I know we have been a bit, some of my friends too. So I think this is there way of capturing attention again given that there are no pirate stories or planes landing in the Hudson lately.
We are all being careful in my family, but not overly so. Just following the general hand washing guidelines.
